AGEING BONES	AGEING BONES 2022	Experimental, Soundtrack	EP (5 tracks or 20 minutes)	We made an EP for the 2022 RPM Challenge and it's DONE! . My friend and longtime guitar-playing musical collaborator George Robertson have formed a project called AGEING BONES. We created some quickly -mixed instrumental sketches using Garageband in Ottawa, and some cuts sent to George to add his guitar. AGEING BONES 2022 is about our aches and ailments as we grow older; our worries, our slow responses to each other; our weakened bodies in winter; the paralysis of loneliness; the moments of grief and beauty in the winter months, the pain and comfort in the routine, the darkness and rage that simmers under the smile of an unwelcome convoy occupier; the shimmer of banging out notes , knowing backroom deals are being made somewhere; the politicians appeasing fascism and then replicating it; the truck convoy-inspired havoc of harassment; the middle-aged daily occupational dread and hope as we change seasons. There's quiet, noise, dark humour, and some sloppy ideas we needed to get out. Sending love from Ottawa & St. John's. Enjoy these freshly fallen sketches. AlienXXX	AlienXXX - RPM 2022 - Rock Metal Guitar Stuff	Rock	EP (5 tracks or 20 minutes)	This time I challenged myself to produce 2 EPs, and I did it! One EP is Electronica and Ambient, the other one is Rock, Metal and Guitar Stuff. For the guitar EP I had several collabs, including some unexpected ones. AnnaCamila	#TheBreakUpEP #RPMChallenge	Indie, Hip-Hop	LP (10 tracks or 35 minutes)	I went through a break up right at the beginning of this challenge so I had a lot to talk about and this became the most cathartic and healing thing I could have hoped for. It clarified my feeling and perspective, reminded me of my value and what I deserve. It also served as an opportunity to say the things to my ex that I wanted to say but knew wouldn't be heard... It took me 4 days to write the majority and then I spent the rest of the month tinkering with mixing (this is my first time producing, engineering performing and mixing an album without any outside help.. except Lando throwing that perfect verse in to round out MTJL and give the project the response perspective). Ben Chapman-Smith	Bad Hanson	Punk	EP (5 tracks or 20 minutes)	Bad Hanson is a glimpse into the cluddered attic that is my backlog of material. This collection of songs represents the more straight forward punk rock songs from a set I wrote forever ago with a band called Garfield the Movie the Band. For this RPM I focused on production quality, I also did an entire demo run through to prepare and plan my captures for this in January. I had a blast I experimenting with my gear, different recording techniques and guitar tones. Lastly, I've been studying sound recording and production at CONA and I used the RPM challenge as a sort of self imposed culminating activty. I'm proud of what I've created this month its not perfect and it was never meant to be. Its just nice picture of some songs my friends and I created. I've got plans to work a bit more on this and release it will a number of vocal features I wasn't able to aquire this month. I planned on doing an album, but school got pretty busy during the month so I ended up with an EP. I wrote everything on acoustic guitar and then did recordings in my room. I did use my university's recording studio for a few sessions as well, so I was able to get some really nice guitar and piano sounds. Ultimately I made this EP for myself, but I'm hoping my friends and family get something out of it as well. His poems are famous for their density and obliquity. To my knowledge I have never understood one. But I’ve always wanted to and the collected ‘Prynne’ sits on my bookshelf teasing me with its strange possibilities. For this year's RPM, I culled words and phrases from Prynne poems to use as songwriting prompts. ghostcycles	Portal/Vortex	Field Recording, Experimental	LP (10 tracks or 35 minutes)	I wound up with an 11-track set of recordings, after initially registering for the 'EP' length goal. One of the tracks ('Shelliverse') is a full song, flushed out from a song idea I recorded on my phone in a bathroom last fall. Three tracks are edits from an out-there experimental jam session my friend and I had on a casio keyboard, drum machine, and bass, and the rest are a mix of field recordings, sound bytes, and guitar-based musical ideas I layered together. I really enjoyed getting into the idea of 'place' for this album, and focusing more on the environment around me as inspiration, as well as collaboration, though I ultimately did the final compiling and editing on my own. I used a Tascam four-track as a starting point and had fun just plugging in different microphones, a loop pedal etc and seeing how far I could get. I also made some digital recordings around the area where I live, as well as on a trip to the desert. The whole thing was really just an excuse to drag all my music stuff out, nerd out about audio and recording and once I started, everything became a new idea! My partner and I recorded air vents and coyotes. I got some friends to harmonize on a little song idea with me. It was fun! I mainly made the album to get myself to engage in the process of music and audio again after not doing much since last year's RPM! But it is also dedicated to friends who spent time with me being creative this month, and long-distance friends who support my music. I realized as I was publishing the album that this is the ten-year anniversary of me using the artist name 'ghostcycles'. This is probably the worst sounding RPM Challenge record I have ever put together, but I am good with leaving room to grow. Machine Age	Delumination	Dark	EP (5 tracks or 20 minutes)	Delumination was produced in its entirety in February 2022 as part of the annual RPM Challenge. Often cacophonous, driving, and frenetic, this EP is a catharsis, possibly a (failed?) exorcism, and a reflection of feelings of frustration, helplessness, and rage amidst the backdrop of two years in a pandemic, the growing tension, ultimately spilling over into invasion in Ukraine, and a worsening political divide in the United States that feels more like a brewing civil war than it does a healthy ideological disagreement. Produced almost entirely on the Synthstrom Deluge (except for Transcendence),Delumination's sound leans into limitations, and treats the Deluge's single stereo output as an effect unto itself, saturating everything to the very brink of chaos. Thanks to my family, particularly my wife, who continue to tolerate me, and to Andrew, Justin, Kreestof, and Robyn for the friendship, feedback, and encouragement to make this happen. Ott's Trashpile	Augmented Folk Blues Field Recordings	Blues, Field Recording	LP (10 tracks or 35 minutes)	As a second generation junkman and working musician for the last "fifty-some years," Ott Tarner has experienced his fair share of ups and downs. The songs he performs are directly inspired by what he has seen and lived "from both sides of paying the bills," as he puts it. Captured outside, under the front awning of his workshop in New Hoyle, Oklahoma, the listener is given the experience of being right there in the moment. Traffic noise, bird calls, the jingle of his dog's collar, and the sounds of Ott's Pabst Blue Ribbon beer cans being opened, drank, and tossed into the collection bin were all left intact. Though he played the country blues, rags, and hokum tunes he's entertained house parties and juke joints with for more than half a century, Mr. Tarner informed the Shive Records field team he wanted his songs to appeal to a younger audience. To honor this request, the raw field recordings were taken to LoFi Shit studio where digital beats and rhythm sections were overdubbed. The resulting product is an album of rough, raw, and raunchy acoustic recordings mixed with Hip-Hop and Mississippi Hill Country style studio production. Rather than have these recordings released under his legal name, he wanted to use Ott's Trashpile because "that's what people call this place—probably have for 80 years." (referring to the workshop he inherited from his father) Ott gave his full approval upon hearing the final mixes and has high hopes to "gain some fame on the computer." Then I spent the last three days actually recording all the instruments by myself, doing vocals, and quickly mixing the ten songs. I definitely made this record for myself, just to force myself to be creative. I'm an old middle-aged guy who was so terrified at the thought of anyone hearing whatever awful song I wrote that it had been almost twenty years since I even attempted to write anything. WXO	Four Seasons in a Day	Rock, Soundtrack	EP (5 tracks or 20 minutes)	This is primarily a piece of music that celebrates being a piece of music. I wanted to stretch as far as I could into different genres, and weave it together into the same piece. I explore minimalism, progressive rock, jazz, metal and traditional music with a sense of humour and positive vibes. I'm influenced by Yes, Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy, Frank Zappa, Rush, The Flower Kings, and Meredith Monk primarily on this project. The more I explore the sounds I love in my own way, the more confident I become that WXO is becoming real. My passion speaks with this work. Mainly using Vanguard 3 acid synths, obscurium and Roland Juno patches its a mixture of dark atmosphere with warm synth work.
