Musical outlet...in the closet...
Saturday, 25 October 2008
We're currently looking into building a new studio in the downstairs closet!  Oh JOY!

Massive heart-to-heart with husband a moment ago, about how miserable I am with nowhere to record except in his office, which is horribly unhappy with Ardour and falls over every thirteen seconds...this is not an exaggeration!  (The dedicated recording pc is currently in the tiny box room next to the nursery, which is less than ideal when you consider that the only opportunity I have to record anything is when the girls are asleep...in the nursery.)

I hope this works out because I'm currently avoiding a whole bunch of collaborators that I am, frankly, enormously lucky to be involved with and, possibly more importantly, if I can't RPM next year I'll be extremely glum, to put it lightly.

Hopeful, Tess

Or car park, will be my next studio. Now that winter is approaching, that should be just delightful...and cold.

I have specified a "play room" as a mandatory element in our next house - now, where can I get another 100k?

Tess, have you ever seen the book "Home recording for muscians"? It is a bit out of date now, unless there is a new version (being geared completely toward recording analog to tape, or at least the version I have is such). It describes in great length how to build a closet studio and how to use that to your advantage. It also has a ton of suggestions on recording in less than ideal environments (which is where I got my idea for a "vocal booth" made up of every towel in the house hung from rods, held up by strings push pined into the ceiling). You can probably get it at your local library through inter library loan for a few weeks to read the pertinent chapters. Heck, that goes for anyone trying to record in weird places!

Cheers! And I've had loads of advice from Mick. Have spent the evening hanging wall hangings up and finding cushions to put in the corners - it's very cosy in there now! I'll post a pic soon.

I keep telling the wife we need fancier towels, so when I post pics of my "studio" it looks better. This is a great excuse for you to get those fancy cushions you have had your eye on!

Wall hangings you say? Do elaborate?

I found some nice ones in the closet, hung them up and the wife actually likes the look (the towels hung from everything did not go over quite as well).

Thanks for the tip SisSav and Mick! I should have been able to think it up on my own, but sometimes the most obvious things are not.
