Writing the song endings is the hardest part.
Thursday, 14 February 2008

Since we're near the middle of the month, I'm trying to finish up writing the endings of all the songs over this weekend, so I can spend the remaining time doing some fine-tuning.

Suffice to say, writing the ending of the song is the hardest part. When a song has only just been started, you can go in any number of directions - the sky is the limit.

However, the further you get into the song, the more limited your options become - you need to write an ending that fits with the material you've already recorded.

The other thing is I want to leave the endings open-ended for some songs - that way, if I discover I'm running short, I can easily expand a track.

I suppose you could also write more songs to fill the gap, but then you have an album with twenty really brief songs on it, which is kind of overkill. (It doesn't feel natural to me.)

On the music I recorded last summer, I had songs hitting the ten minute mark easily. It's really tough to do that in a single month, though - some of the monster tracks I was chipping away at for months and months and months.

I'm pretty good at endings. I particularly like the ones the kind of trail... off...

It can be lame but you get a little more time out of your song and a chance to play a hook again, and again, and again, and again, and again...
3 Eh - I might try it for one song..

I've never really been a big fan of fades, though. I've always liked an ending note, sound sequence, or unsettling non-ending.

Come to think of it, I do use fades, but rarely with a repeating melody trailing away.
