You shouldn't really give explanations and commentary on things you make. They should be able to walk alone. But screw that, here's my track by track comments:
1. To do list...started out as an attempt to make a song similar to Fools Gold by the Stone Roses. I failed miserably ofcourse and it turned into this sixminuteplus funkjam monopolistyle. I didn't want to keep it an instrumental track so I read a hopelessly ambitious to-do-list over it. I do think it makes a good start to the record, but it will probably put a lot of people off as well; this megalomanic guy (called Monopoli no less!) reciting all the grand things he is going to achieve over a cold nervous beat that goes on for too long. I hope some people will get the point at the ending and the fact that the next song is called; 2. Funeral Sunshine...slowmoving almost dubby instrumental. I especially liked the fake mididrums I played from a keyboard (on slower speed and in different takes) 3. Words are so overrated...a simple song with overserious lyrics. Not much fun, but it had to be done. 4. Minimum Wage...This is one of three songs I didn't have lyrics and vocals for till the last day 28th of february. I worked damn hard that day! This was the first one I did that morning. The lyrics were vaguely inspired by a 40something woman I know who says she's a band and concert-promoter but other than visiting social events and talking about all the important people she knows she never seems to achieve anything. The mix isn't quite what it should be; the vocals are a little too loud and it could use a little compression. 5. Britney, you can stay with me...turned out to be the hit of the record. Inspired by the mediafuzz over Britney Spears bald head and supposed to be a fluffy poptune, which it turned out to be. Part of it was played on NPR!! It can only go downhill from here. 6. The Dust...at this point I'm relieved to hear another voice. The voice of Jessica from My Imaginary Life. Just what the album needed; as if someone called on a lonely day. The song is actually one of two old ones I wrote for my last band which I left before recording them. 7. Between Liverpool and Dusseldorf...the second song from 28-2-07. I wrote the lyrics sort of about feeling closer to a lot of European music than to the typical American musictradition; where Liverpool is the Beatles (or perhaps Ladytron) and Dusseldorf Kraftwerk (though I'm not quite sure if they weren't from Keulen actually. But Dusseldorf sounds better anyway) and Amsterdam is also geographically somewhere inbetween that. I decided to use the Microkorg vocoder for the vocals and had a lot of fun recording several tracks. When I started mixing I found I had made a mistake and recorded too much of the regular vocal together with the vocoded sound. But I used that anyway. Especially in the bits where I recite the city-names I would have liked more vocoder and less vocal, so it's too low in the mix now. I'll probably redo that. Also I discovered later that in the fade you hear a sirene outside blaring. Oh well. 8. Friends like these...second old tune. I like the fact that the bass is the melody in the intro. I really enjoy basslines in general (I'm not really a bassplayer though) 9. Valentinesday...the third song from 28-2-07 and you can tell I started getting tired here. It's so uninspired and bored that it almost becomes art again. I wrote it deliberately line by line, as if it was an entry in a diary about 14-2-07; which was my birthday and I went 35 but it was also in the middle of a very dark month due to some severe familytrouble and being completely fed up with my job. 10. It's a record!...I had planned to add at least one typical fillersong on the album, just for the heck of it. Now I really needed one to get to ten songs, so I knocked up this one in an hour or so also on 28-2-07 (I told you I worked hard that day, didn't I?) It's the sort of organwaltzthingy Blur would put on an album. I put it through the Izotope Vinyl plugin et voila: It's a record!
I put 5 and 7 on my Myspace-page, which looks really sad cause I've only got 4 friends and one of them is Tom who I really just tolerate because I've got no other friends. Truth is that I didn't tell anybody yet about my Myspace-page so this is really the official opening. Be my friend everybody :-) Views: 1710
