The RPM Challenge: An Album in 28 Days
Why did the administrator, the IT specialist, and the stay-at-home
dad spend nearly sixty hours over four weeks writing and recording an
album they never intended to sell? Because they could. And because
someone dared them to. No pot of gold waited at the end of the album;
no prize money, no label or sponsorship deal — just a vague
guarantee that they'd be glad they did it. So it came to be that three
men from Oakland and Fremont resolved to turn over their weekends and
weekday evenings throughout the month of February to the painstaking
yet ultimately satisfying task of producing a complete pop album. read more

RPM gets bands revved
Last year, Boston band Walter
Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys flew back from a Toronto gig to
attend the RPM Global Listening Party in Portsmouth, N.H., then
immediately hopped on another plane headed for Montreal to continue
touring.
“Silly, perhaps,” said band member Edrie. “But it was so great.”
This is just the sort of devotion the RPM Challenge generates. read more

Capital Region musicians up to the RPM Challenge
Many of your favorite hometown musicians spent February scrambling.
They were writing, recording, mixing and fine-tuning new albums as fast
as they could.
They were all participants in the RPM Challenge. Record Production
Month, spearheaded by a group in New Hampshire, is similar to
NaNoWriMo, which dares people to write a novel in one month. Not only
that, but they pick the shortest month. Just 28 days from hesitant
words jotted in a tattered notebook to aural bliss or bust. read more

RPM Challenge listening party: ‘It’s like a nerdy dream’
Tom Elias stood on The Music Hall stage with a bouquet of red roses.
“They’re for my girl,” he said, beaming at his wife. “This is a big accomplishment for Jo Ann.”
“I’m
so proud,” said Jo Ann Elias, pointing out her one-woman blues band
Winterbourne, amid hundreds of other RPM Challenge CDs on stage. “It’s
amazing what you can do if you just commit yourself. It was quite the
challenge — it was like taking a pilgrimage.”
The
pilgrimage ended for the Eliases, and several hundred kindred spirits,
Saturday night at Mecca — aka The Music Hall — aka RPM Challenge
headquarters. read more

2009 RPM Challenge participants step forward to host global listening parties
Every month or so, multi-instrumentalist Taylor Weston clears out all
the furniture from his living room in Seattle and hosts a concert for
area artists. Weston lives with the three other members of his metal
band, Gladiators Eat Fire. Their spacious living room has capacity for
up to 60 people, and they have hosted as many as four bands on a single
night, sometimes expanding their jams to the rooftop or the backyard. read more

Like most great ideas,
the RPM Challenge is simple: Write, record and complete an album in the
year’s shortest, dreariest month. Begun locally in New Hampshire three
years ago, the Challenge became a worldwide phenomenon with little
forethought from its founders. read more

The 2008 RPM Challenge —
to write and record an original album in February, just because you can
— is about to begin. Hundreds of musicians from around the world have
already signed up.
Last year, more than 850 albums were recorded as part of the challenge,
