Last Saturday night I played the coolest gig I ever have (or probably will) at the Woody Guthrie Center in Pampa, Tx., on the way back from out west. The center was originally Harris Drugs, where Woody held a job and found a guitar in the back room and proceeded to make folk music history. Pampa is also my Mom's hometown, so about half the audience were relatives, and, unbeknownst to me, they had flown my Mom in to attend (surprise!). The set list was all original stuff (with a couple of Guthrie songs thrown in), unlike my usual set of half-covers, half-originals, and included a few things which may pop up on the RPM'09 album: a couple of instrumentals I've been playing a while but haven't recorded yet, as well as a tribute to Woody, "Jump a Train". I guess, due to the inspiring circumstances, I played the best public performance I ever have, with almost no mistakes, and just a generally good feeling of connecting with the audience. These moments can be rare. I would rather play to an attentive audience for free (it was a benefit for the center), than to be background music for a crowd that's not listening for hundreds of dollars. It was quite an experience, I just wish I had recorded it! Views: 1029
