This thing would have been done already if I would just practice...a little. I create a gtr part, bass, whatever, run through it once or twice and lay it down. Its flawed, and spend weeks 'punching in' or moving stuff around. If I'd 30 minutes getting it right first, I'd have been done way sooner. I tell myself, I'm just laying a scratch track and I'll redo it later. But that requires my to do what I should have done in the first place and practice the part, then lay it down right. God, I hate to practice. Just impatience on may part. I want to hear all the pieces, hear the song. Best vocals I ever put down I practiced on the way home from work - 30 minutes. It was U2, but the voice was warmed up by time it was time to work. Can't do that with the gtr. Changed a song last weekend - different key - now in G instead of A. Different fingering, sounds dreadful. I will have no choice but work on the fingering ahead of time. God, I hate to practice.

Tune yer guitar down a step, same fingering for A, but it'll be in G!

I feel your pain. I can spend so much time 'fixing' stuff that could have been done more effeciently by a retake--and you don't learn much at all by fixing.

Just because I am forced by lack of talent to use certain shortcuts shouldn't extend to shortcutting the few things I CAN do reasonably well.

We are sad, sad creatures. If, however, you can commit to recording an album in a month, you can with the same determination 'limit' yourself to well played tracks without inserts/edits.

And if you do, you gain the added benefit of being a slightly better player at the end of it.
