I fought the review and the review won
(Wednesday, 26 March 2008) Written by Sister Savage

So I did it...I popped myself in the queue and I was reviewed by Beckwith.

Okay, it does sting a bit to begin with - you've actually asked for criticism, rather than tentatively asking your mum if she likes your song because you know you'll get an obligatory 'Yes, Dear.'  But there were a few compliments to soothe my shaking ego and, more importantly, a load of constructive points that I can use as a springboard for improvement...

So, my four major notes for next year:

1. I have to stop holding back vocally.  I kind of always knew it, but now I can see that my songs are really suffering from it.  I get so far with something...and it starts to build..and then because I'll have to match a bigger sound with a bigger vocal, I pull back at the last minute and the whole thing ends on a quiet note when it was apparently leading somewhere. One way out is to get someone else to sing my songs for me.

2. I need to experiment more - the throwaway track I recorded on the morning I posted my cd had a really good write-up.  I need to stop being so self-conscious and go with it.  Possibly submit something next year that is just me rather than relying on guitar tracks from other people.

3. People expect choruses, I should try to write some.

4. I need to break in to Michelangelo's studio and steal more of his backing tracks.

Anyone else thinking about joining the critique thread that hasn't already done so - do it!

Tess

IMPORTANT NOTE: Thanks to my last blog entry, I have promised to review about 26 cds - if you're still waiting, I *will* get there!

I don't mind getting reviews, it's giving reviews thats a bit of a problem for me.
I switch between being ultra-critical and thinking "who am I to judge this?"

:-) I know what you mean. I tend to be super-positive (which isn't very useful to the recipient, let's face it), but I'll say something if it *really* needs to be said.

Yes, I too can suffer from some of the "super-positive" feedback-giving you speak of. I try to stay honest as much as possible though...about all you can do.

And then you get into the fact that some people are rather picky about technical aspects, others not so. Basically why some people love technical metal and have a firey hatred for punk, or vice versa. Which is basically why if you're looking for more "sonic" feedback, I'm not really close to the best. Basically I describe myself as a musician, one of the most awesome guitarists on the planet (er...ok, that's maybe a bit much, but I do think of everything I try to do, I can play the heck out of a guitar), even a so-so and hopefully getting better vocalist, but never have I claimed to be very "technical." And a lot of the stuff I listen to is equally not as technical. In other words...there's many times feedback just depends on the ears it goes through....

Yeah, Tess, you need to really step up to that mic and SING. You're voice is beyond excellent so don't be shy. I'm here to help you get those vocals booming on songs that need it like "Stick Around for Joy". At the end of that one you should be singing near you're full volume still under control.

I got all kinds of tips for you. In fact, if you want I'll send you a step by step doc that'll show you how to set up the mic, preamp, and gear so you can SING without filling the track with noise.

Send me an E-mail if you're interested.

Didjeridus are LOUD and HARD to record cause they are extremely dynamic as that column of pressurized air changes. I can bust it out with my biggest, loudest sticks inches from the mic and Ardour will happily handle it. I think the same setup can handle your pipes when you're not singing so dainty. Delicately pretty works for some songs, but not all.

In that E-mail you send, send me your list of gear, please. Brand sand models if you can.
 6 take Mick's advice
Written by Zumatar and Galaxy Angel, on 03-26-2008 11:00
...definitely take up master Mick on his offer.
computers can record what's there, but if what you are sending the computer isn't perfect you will know it.
I have recorded a few female singers with nice strong voices like yours and, unless you use some "studio tricks" getting that full, rich, dynamic sound is very hard.
....I remember a dad saying "I want my baby's voice to the best, and natural, so turn off the reverb, etc." I did, and he quickly changed his mind....we got the 'natural sound', but not going directly into the recorder, and this girl then was able to SING and not worry about the recording, thereby disovering her voice.

good luck

Oh, yes, forgot to mention....26 reviews? wow...well, I think I sent you a message giving you the green light to review mine if you wanted...because I wasn't sure if I was ever going to get around to that critique thread. But I did, so feel free to take me off the list. Or keep it on...if you want. Either way is fine with me. But 26 cd's? you really know how to pick 'em don't ya. But of course, as we were all telling you, the thread wasn't so bad, now was it? Just like a band-aid, don't think about it and just rip it off...lol...what an analogy...

10 Reviews and what I've learnt
Written by Volksmetall, on 03-26-2008 16:47
Must admit I was a little trepidatious about submitting to the review process - but then I thought "what the hell" no one apart from my wife and Tess have heard the stuff and it might be worth getting an objective opinion.

Jodie & Bill were very kind and constructive and I resolve to do the following;

1) Sing out more. Find a combination of key/volume/mix that I'm happy with and try to sing more. Get over the fact that I don't like my voice and learn to live with it. This came through in the review, but the most telling moment was my wife saying "I've given birth in front of you twice and you won't even sing in front of me... get over yourself". A good point, well made.

2) Practice guitar against a metronome. You said it, my old guitar teacher said it, I know it... time to do it. Come to think about, practicing full stop would be a start.

3) Speed things up a bit. Listening to some of these is like swimming through treacle, wearing a gorilla suit, having eaten a four course meal (including entire cheeseboard).

4) Spend more than twenty minutes a song on writing and recording lyrics. I know I was time pressured, but there's really no excuse for not spending a moment coming up with a better metaphor/turn of phrase. "I’m feeling like, like I’m a creep, a creep, a creep in love." Deary me... must do better!

So, my advice is submit to review and do what they say. Also, do a review - we ll listen to music and can have opinions!

Clearing out your desk...Boo! You shouldn't have nicked all those post-its.

Yes, I'll be gone, but I will leave a lingering smell and will arrange lunch forthwith!

But I'm glad you got something out of it. Thanks for the opportunity! I feel the same way - do get feedback and critique as much as you can. Oh and you want to hear "not singing out"? I'm so guilty of that on "mad at you" it's not even funny!
