Advice, please!
(Friday, 22 February 2008) Written by Strummindude

I'm not going to make it. I have six songs almost in the bag, and I might get a seventh done. But since they're all around 4 minutes, I need at least nine songs to meet the challenge. There's no way I'll accomplish that in a week.

I guess I could include a couple of "karaoke-versions", or ad-lib a really long instrumental piece just to fill out the space. But even with that, I'd probably lack the inner sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction. I think it would make me feel like I kinda cheated. Better just face defeat and live to fight another day, perhaps.

Or what do you think? How would you handle it? It's not as if the songs are dead in the water though, even though the album won't be completed. They'll likely come to good use anyway, in another form.

Slice! Dice! Reverse the vocal, remodel!!!

You might find magic in the process. Or, it might be so lame and frustrating that you pick up a guitar (or piano, or glockenspiel, or cantaloupe, as the case may be) and bash out a few new ones.

Go ahead and do the long instrumental piece. Sometimes those can be quite good, when yer not trying to hard.

Try doing this - take a song you already have a melody for, and do an instrumental jam from that, playing around with it.

That way, you have an instrumental that doesn't sound like it was just thrown in to fill space. It has a purpose.

How about doing a couple of remixes of your songs and tack those on the end? Its been done before, there\'s at least one example on the Jukebox from last year that is 5 songs and 5 remixes.

try one of your previous tunes in a different style as well. for example if you have a full band version, do an unplugged version which is a lot easier.

Hey, thanks for all of your cheers and good ideas! I guess tonight and tomorrow will be crucial, as they're the last substantial time I can spend with the recording part of the project. Think I'll need all next week to put it all together, mix, master and make a cover. You certainly pumped me up enough to give it one last desperate go. I guess I won't throw in the towel just yet then, after all.

Thanks again...

I have just written a 1 minute 20 song song called "Filler" about how I have only written it to complete the challenge. It's atrocious, but fits the spirit of the exercise. Don't fail (for want of a better word) the challenge just because your standards are so high. Have fun with it. Recite your adolescent poetry if you have to, but do it.

You still have 1/4 of the time. You can do it!

Yes.
 9 bang a couple chords

simplify it. by playing just a few chords, even droning on one for quite a while, you can write an interesting melody over it (or at least quickly learn what kind of melodies you tend to write) until the muse strikes to switch to a new chord and move on. not only is it a good way to improv a song, but its similar to the style of some other really successful artists. might be worth a shot in a time of need.
