So, this is my first ever solo project and I've come to the realisation that I can't sing. It's not that I can't hold a tune, just that my voice is so weedy and lacks depth. I've done a few takes on some of the tracks that I've got ready and it just doesn't sound right.
But then, I had an idea. Maybe it's the room and the fact that my studio (bedroom) is too large. So tomorrow I'm going to try and record the vocals in the smallest room in the house, the downstairs toilet. My main recording computer is a MacBook and I can balance that on the toilet and just about get a mic stand in there. It can't sound any worse than what I've currently got and may just make the difference...

3 Don't fret so much Written by Endicott Road , on 02-09-2008 15:48 If you're anything like me, you are your own worst critic. Don't compare yourself to anything you hear on the radio, or put out on CD by the big recording companies. They have the equipment and the budget to make anyone sound good. Do the very best you can on your vocals, and let it go at that. I've been doing that for quite some time, and I've had comments on my voice both positive and negative. I never let it stop me. As long as you're doing your best, that's all that matters. And, I think that's the point of the challenge, if you ask me. Keep at it! Regards. ER
4 Yeah, what they said ... Written by The Checkers Speech , on 02-09-2008 15:59 Seriously, have you listened to the Jukebox at all? Some of my favorite albums from last year's challenge have some really weak vocals, but that just adds to the charm. (PM me if you want to know which ones, I'm not going to out them as bad singers here!) This isn't the American Idol finals, this is real people, most of us not in a professional studio. Of course we're going to sound a bit rough. If this challenge weren't about being real, it wouldn't exist.

I loathe the bit where I have to sing but am determined to carry on trying. The best hope I can offer is to record them and then use some effects to EQ out the bits of voice that grate and some reverb to cover an warbles. That's my suggestion..
