Microphone question..
(Sunday, 03 February 2008) Written by Alternate Modes of Underwater Conciousness

If you took a microphone into the shower with you, would you get electrocuted?

It's sad that I get all my good ideas in the shower.

(I'd spare RPMers the video footage.)

Unless your shower is completely enclosed, you should be able to mike it up without getting the microphone wet. Duct tape it to the ceiling or wall with the mic pointed at the shower. The singing with the shower noises in the background should be interesting!
3 Is it *really* the shower?

Some folks find singing in the shower to be a great inspiration. It could be that a nice hot shower really inspires. It could also be that the acoustics in the shower room really make your voice sound great. It might be worth experimenting with a microphone, a pair of headphones and a nice reverb effect - then close your eyes and *pretend* you're in the shower :)

I read an interview once... the guy that did sound design for "the abyss" did a lot of underwater recording using mics in condoms... seems like that would be worth a try if your really serious about it hehe ;)

otherwise loading up your monitors with verb is the next best thing i guess... watch out for the karaoke vibe!!

A microphone in a condom - I could see how it would work, but it would get a little messy. I think I might try a latex glove instead. =)

As far as why I get good ideas in the shower - I think it's a Ganzfeld Effect created by the noise from the shower. It blocks all other background noise out.

(The whole idea of a Ganzfeld effect is some random stimulus that completely overpowers your senses - it can cause hallucinations. Blizzard conditions where all you can see is white will cause this. (It often happened to polar explorers.)
