5 Levels Of Good (by request)
(Friday, 18 January 2008) Written by Gary Fox

Hey All,

There was a thread last year about how do you know when a song is good or not, and a similar one this year. Someone sent me a private message asking me to restate my "5 Levels of Good" that I posted last year. So, here it is, just for you. (you know who you are)

I also included the stealth level 6. Enjoy.

Cheers,

Gary

Level 1 Good: That almost visceral reaction you get when you first play back what you have written and you get all excited because you KNOW you are on to something.

Level 2 Good: After working on it and recording it officially, you realize that it is even better than your first recording of the main idea or hook. This means you didn't screw up the inspiration.

Level 3 Good: You find yourself humming or singing it quietly to yourself while wandering the aisles of the grocery store looking for garlic infused olive oil. (the particular grocery item is not relevant to good)

Level 4 Good: You play it for someone else and they say "Wow, that's probably one of the best songs I have ever heard from you" (you're not sure if that's good or not, but you accept it as a compliment)

Level 5 Good: That person talks to you about a week later and says "Hey, I was at the grocery store, looking for garlic infused olive oil, and I couldn't stop singing that song you wrote. Can I get a copy of it?"

Level 6 Good:
(I know you have been there and it hurts)

You play another new song for your friend the following week. They say "Yeah, it's alright, but it's NOT AS GOOD as the first one you played for me."

Cheers again,

Gary

1) You realized you didn\'t forget to push int he \"Record\" button when you pressed the play button and actually got the track

2) You listen to it and realize the guitar break was so god you\'ll probably never be able to play it again

3) On play back, you can\'t really tell that place in the didj part where the spit formed on your lips and gurgled on the 5th harmonic right before the hoot

4) You find a plugin you can use to tone down the over-amped snare that used to stand out so far above the rest of the drum part

5) You\'re mix works well enough to hide the fact you forgot to tune the guitar to the keyboard before you started

6) In the end, it sounds like a song
