I might lose my job
(Monday, 20 August 2007) Written by Endicott Road

I just found out that the company I now work for has been acquired by another company.  While no one is saying what will happen, I can see down the road that I might be laid off.  I work in purchasing, and the company that acquired us has a distribution center next to FedEx in Memphis TN.  If I were in sales, I could always make the case that I could take on new territories, new products, and adapt myself to the new product lines and company.  But, since I'm in purchasing, and there are doubtless people in Memphis doing the same thing I do, I think my days here are numbered.  The sale closes at the end of September, so this might be a pretty SH*TTY Christmas for yours, truly.

I probably haven't said much about my professional life, but I've had a bad time of it recently.  I was working for a company for about 11 years, and thought I'd found a home, but they decided to do with one less person in the department, and I was odd man out.  I took a job out of town with the idea of selling the house and moving the family.  The house didn't sell.  It was on the market off and on for three years.  The housing market in this town is worse than the national average (for several reasons), and our house, with 4 kids, 2 parents, and 3 cats, has sustained a lot of wear and tear.  Add to that a couple of refinances and a dead AC unit, and my payments are high and my equity is low.  I found a job at this company in town, left the old company and came back, and now it looks like I might have to warm up the resume yet again.  Murphy has definitely been working overtime on me!

For those of you who have traded CD's, commented on my blog entries, and have generally been a good friend on this site, let me say THANK YOU.  If you know of a company in Columbus, Ohio, that can use an experienced purchasing agent, let me know.  I might have to submit my resume.  If you don't, say a prayer or sing a song for me (Tangmo's I'm Doing Fine comes to mind).

In the mean time, let's see what's on Monster.com today . . . .

If you have to find a new job, just put in the same effort you did on the February Challenge CD and everything may just turn out better than before!

I've been through that laid-off crap more times than I'd like to admit. I've never been able to last more than five years at one company, before they start "downsizing." At least I didn't have a family to worry about. I know that's got to make it a thousand times worse. I sure hope things work out all right for you. You're in my prayers, my friend!

That's tough, ER. I'm sorry to hear that but I know enough about you to know you'll hit the ground running.

It is an uncaring in general, ER. In business now days people don't matter. It's simply praying at the altar of the all mighty buck.

Good luck!

No great advice here, but definately put your best RPM-worthy effort into getting your ducks in a row 'in the event'. Wishing you the best.

there's truth to that saying, "everthing works out the way it's supposed to" -- just hang in there and you'll see, it will probably be better than before

I know that busted feeling. Weird thing was that when the money was tight, we had people over for potlucks. When we had cash, we stuck to ourselves. Having a simple meal with good company got us through some tough times. It may have been beans, rice and chicken - but there were some laughs thrown in. Guarentee it's not just you. This will help you keep your mind right...it's easy to start feeling desperate. Desparate doesn't do well in interviews. What was really cool was those dinners only cost each family about 4 bucks.
