Re-Recording! Blinding Flash of the Obvious
(Monday, 12 March 2007) Written by Michelle Moon   (See blogs)

Heh. I've been sitting about fretting about the travels my RPM CD might take. Last year, most of my friends got a copy, and I was proud enough to give it out. This year, with my rough and rocky DIY recording, I'm a lot less proud of what I submitted.

BUt after thinking about it tonight, I realized: I like the songs themselves well enough. Using my now-somewhat-better understanding of mixing, I could re-record some of them to put the CD together, and use the newer (presumably better) versions as the tracks I actually burn and share. So the RPM jukebox will have the rushed-to-print versions, but I can upload and share recordings that satisfy me a bit more.

I know - duh, right? But you have to understand that I never did any home recording before. I'm not used to having equipment right here at my beck and call that will allow me to record any time! I can actually re-work the stuff before sending it out, get rid of some of the harsh buzzes and pops and imbalances that actually hurt to listen to....

I've got the same issue.. there's the "RPM Edition" and then there's the one I'm working on now.. some songs, without rewrites, to somehow maintain the spirit of the RPM Challenge, but re-recording the vocals and redoing the mixdown/mastering.

cheers! and congratulations on getting it done.

yeah, I've thought about having the tracks sort of weave into each other with some music between tracks, making it all flow together -- and others have suggested it for the album, anyway... fact is, the songs were written and done -- making a 'post-challenge' version of the album with those songs, but the added touches, and perhaps a slightly better mix on some of the tracks -- might be a worthy project to undertake.
 3 yes, duh.

Songs aren't finished even when they are burned to disk, so why should they be burned to disk only when they're finished?

Only fish, reptiles and insects lay their eggs and wander off. You are being very mammalian and birdlike. God bless you.
