ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/07/20 09:02 If you have uploaded you music to last.fm, they are now paying royalties if you choose to set it up that way. Also, i have started a group for anyone else who wants to join! heres the link! http://www.last.fm/group/RPM%2B2008
I figure its a way to get a little more exposure for everyone, and to get the RPM name out there to all the people who listen to last.fm
Hope to see you there!

Re the royalties program, how much would I get for my 2 listens?

Yeah, that's right, 2. In nearly 4 months. One of those was me.

Re:ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/07/24 03:42 Am I the only one who finds that site a complete nightmare to navigate?

It just seems to be complete nonsense. I know I joined this group, but the last time I logged in there seemed to be no obvious way to see what groups I belonged to. I can't make head nor tail of it.

I also uploaded my album on alonetone.com (thanks to Joshua Wentz for recommending it to me) and people are actually listening to it there.

Re:ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/07/24 07:00 Colin, you're not alone. I absolutely HATE the setup of Last.fm. I'm offended by the uselessness of just about every single thing on any given page... to many tabs, really ugly layout, poor spacing... it's a mess.

You've reminded me that I need to get my Alonetone back in business... it's been on my To-Do list.

Re:ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/07/25 07:02 Ummm... ditto. +1.

Last.fm is a total waste of bandwidth.

And, yes, JW - get yer ass back on Alonetone. You've been missed.

Re:ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/07/25 08:50 I have been hating on last.fm ever since I got on it. It's been totally useless for me. Frankly, though, so have MySpace and Virb and I never could get things to work in alonetone, either. I guess I is just skwewed.

I joined the group, though, and here's my artist page on last.fm: http://www.last.fm/music/Kai+Starr for what it's worth. It's not as if anyone's knocking the door down to hear my old fashioned junk.

I think that's the thing that bugs me the most about it. There is no connection between my user page and artist page. If someone finds me on one page, they can't easily find me on the other. It just seems like a dumb setup.

It's okay if you're using it as a listener, as opposed to an artist. I'm starting to get really sucked in.

http://www.last.fm/music/Strange+Republik

thanks...

Btw, I think I'm in the minority here, but I actually like last.fm's site, especially since the new design went live.

All that matters is that it's easy for people to listen to themusic, if you're an artist with good music (UPLOAD IT FIRST) then the rest should take care of itself. Remember that last.fm charts are based on people's actual listening habits. It's not like myspace where you can spam people to come to your page.

Once people start logging plays for your music you'll begin to see similar artists listed on your profile, thus making it easier for you to be discovered by new listeners and so on.

Just be patient

I'm really glad last.fm's working for you - you seem to be doing great there - but I'm sure I'm not the only musician there who's been lost in the crowd and forgotten. Every time I logged in: "Who's listening? Nobody in the whole fucking world. I may as well have not bothered." My site on last.fm says to the world, "Nobody gives a shit about this guy's music"; maybe that's the real reason I don't like it. If I were doing well there I would forgive the flaws.

However, the royalty program isn't for the likes of us. I'm sure Radiohead, the Stones and Coldplay are making money hand over fist, but for an unsigned musician it might just keep you in guitar strings.

Re:ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/08/07 01:25 I had absolutely no listeners on last.fm until I removed the free downloads. Now I have a few listeners, because they're forced to play the streams instead of just downloading the songs for free. Seriously, it was like zero and now it's something around 29 listeners and 50-something plays. That's not a lot, but it's more than none!

If you're offering free downloads, try taking them off and see what happens! I learned my lesson from that and have taken the downloads off all my external music pages. The only place you can dl them now is on my private site, and you have to make a special effort to come there to get them. It's true that if you give things away for free, those things won't be held in much esteem. Most people don't appreciate free stuff. They take it and just expect you to keep on giving them everything for free, all the while listening to their criticisms and demands of what other free stuff they want. To me, that kind of kills my joy in sharing my music. Nothing free from me, any more!

Done.

If that works, I'll upload my other stuff there as well, on a streaming-only basis. Otherwise, I just won't bother. My last.fm page will sit there, unregarded and unloved, in perpetuity.

Well Kaichi, I 'm glad that doing that worked for you. Unforunatly that hasn't been true for us. We only have one song for freedownload on FM and we've had four plays in 6 months. I share Colin's sentiments on this site. In less then one week we've had over 150 plays on alonetone, 71 of which came today. If I'm measuring success by how many listens we've got, I would say Alonetone wins by a large margin ditto on virb.

Now, once posted, your songs are available for download, you cannot turn that feature off. So if you don't want your songs downloaded for free do not join Alonetone, if you want someone to actually listen to your songs and your not getting play elsewhere you might want to try it.

Go look at the stuff that Sister Savage posted, she is getting a lot of plays and justifiably so. She sounds so good!

I guess it's just different for everyone. I generally have to try a lot of different things to see what works for me. I still hate the setup at Last.fm, and I have an Alonetone page but I could never get it to take images or anything. I don't know if it's my browser or my sucky dialup slowness or what, but I got so frustrated with it that I just stopped trying. I had about given up on Last, too, but whatever they did to the interface lately has made it a lot easier to work with (though it's still clunky and ugly and confusing). When I first got it, I couldn't even upload songs. It would time out on my sucky dialup connection. I had to get a friend with broadband to upload my songs! Whatever they did has more or less solved that problem for me, too, as I was able to upload one song that was nearly 9 mb, without any trouble.

I didn't mind having the songs downloadable, but when people just download them and don't stream them, they don't get counted as plays, so you can't tell how many people are enjoying them. It's even worse when nobody says anything about whether they liked them or not. It makes me feel bad to put stuff up and think that it's just being ignored. At least this way I'm seeing that SOMEBODY likes my music (all 29 of them, woohoo! I'm a star! ). If somebody repeatedly plays my songs, I KNOW that they must like them, but I can't see they're doing that if they just download them and leave. For all I know, they might be listening to five seconds of them, deciding they hate them, and trashing them.

I was getting some plays on Virb, too, until I put on free downloads. I don't know why it makes such a big difference for me, but it does. Maybe it's the particular audience that my stuff appeals to. I don't know.

*sigh* I forgot to take my own part of that quote out. Hence the edit.

Re:ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/08/07 04:36 Speaking of Virb, I don't trust their play counts. Something in their engine is funky. People have told me they listened to a couple of songs on my Virb, yet it did not count them. I tried playing one myself and it didn't count me, either. I'm kind of thinking of getting rid of that page, altogether. I don't like the way the songs get compressed on it, anyway.

Re:ATTn all RPM 2008 album submittees! - 2008/08/07 10:30 Okay, I really like SoundClick (as I said a few posts back), but having been on Alonetone for ooh 3 days, I have decided to delete my SoundClick account.

Alonetone is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. It's just so damn cosy! You feel like you're right in the middle of everyone else and the banter is fab.

I see now that my heart was empty (and breaking) on SoundClick.

That's an awfully kind thing to say, and I appreciate it! I've had a page there for a good while, as I got one right after someone (probably JW) first mentioned it in these forums. It always lets me log on, but nothing else. The site let me sign in, just now, but I still couldn't do anything. It wouldn't even take a picture. The box comes up but the loading rolly-icon thing just rolls and rolls forever. It has, of this moment, been rolling for about five minutes. I think it just doesn't like my computer or browser or something. If I can get over to my sister's place to use her connection and pc, this weekend, I'll try, again. I just hate to have to keep imposing on friends and family to get my stuff on these various sites. I feel pretty crappy about myself, as it is, without being a problem to everyone, on top of it.
