drum loops - 2008/05/16 01:34 I'd been holding out starting my next non-RPM album because I needed some good drum stuff, and I wasn't impressed with the loops that came with Garageband/Logic. Thanks to a tip from Baby's First Ride, I bought Mick Fleetwood's Total Drumming disc, which is great. Last night I went though most of the loops, which are in Rock, Funk and Blues genres (wish there was jazz and country...). Nice.

I also checked out the Looperman site, thanks to a mention from Mr. Wentz.

Anymore suggestions for good drum loops?

Re:drum loops - 2008/05/16 02:42 There's so many loops out there. I typically keep a mixture of everything, but I don't really have any true jazz drum loops sets to recommend. But, I did a search on found this:

Again, I have no history with these folks but there are some samples to listen to on the site. Maybe its what you are looking for...and most importantly they are royalty free. Basically, anything you create using them is yours. As you look around, gather some review if you can find any. Not all loops are created with the same quality. If possible, make sure the loops are all from the same session. I have loops I bought that I could tell one set was recorded in a small room and another set was in a large loom.

Re:drum loops - 2008/05/16 15:29 I cannot recommend SmartLoops enough. They are very well-played and consistently recorded loops of real drums, and are "acidized" so you can change the tempo. Even better, they include a stereo mix as well as the individual drums tracks, so you can pan out the high-hat, put reverb on the snare, compress just the kick, etc. Some of the libraries also have an "ambient room" track, so you can give it that big, live "Bonham" sound if you want it. SmartLoops offer much more control of the mix than any other drum loops I have been able to find. And, like all the other drum loops for sale that I've seen, SmartLoops are royalty free.

I used them on my RPM'08 album and think they really took it up a notch. Got good feedback from folks as to the quality of the drums as well. Lots of good patterns are included in each library, as well as fills and other ear candy. Listen for yourself if you want to hear:

I checked out BetaMonkey and several others, and they are OK but only provide the stereo mix. Looperman's only saving grace is they are free, but I haven't found any loops that interested me enough to use them. Then again, I'm looking for real recorded drums, not MIDI loops, which Looperman seems to have more of.

I will have to check out the Mick Fleetwood loops. All in all, though, I'd much rather play with a real drummer if I do this again, but recording drums well is pretty tough, to say nothing of the drummer's performance and timing...

Re:drum loops - 2008/05/17 14:32 The Drums On Demand sets are worth checking out. I got their country disc recently and there are 30 song sets all containing a variety of parts so you can make it sound like an interesting drummer.

Re:drum loops - 2008/05/18 02:06 I stumped up the $179 for the entire SmartLoops collection, and I am absolutely blown away. You use the pre-mixed tracks to create your pattern, then when you're done, they have the individual parts to all the loops so you can mix the drums yourself - bit of reverb on the snare, more kick to the bass, more treble on the hat - it enables much finer control that any other loops I've ever used. Awesome, and well worth the money.

I've been using the Fleetwood loops on my first ever song to use loops (I'm a newbie). The key seems to be to not get too elaborate, and think like a drummer. Ok, I won't do a drummer joke here.
