Yay Eri Chan! I came across "KitsuniBi" about a week ago (at the suggestion of another RPM'er) and liked it instantly for it's ambient minimalism.
Great story behind the song, too.
Glad to see NPR is getting more eclectic with their choices!

I can't find Ral Partha Vogelbacher on the artist list, nor Shrill Falcons on the jukebox. Can anyone help me out? (Bidwell's Second Stage track sounds fantastic.)

Re:NPR Update - 2008/04/29 05:23
Now that you mention it, the NPR site makes no mention of a link between Ral and RPM, so maybe they've quit us early. I wouldn't be surprised, honestly. Consistency is not the show's strong suit. I've been subscribed to Second Stage since before it was called Second Stage, and there have always been programming gaps. So, unless there's a surprise tomorrow, our time in the "spotlight" may be up.

Re:NPR Update - 2008/04/29 05:36
Obviously, they must have just run out of music worthy of the show. They thought they could make it through the end of April, but they went through all the good stuff more quickly than they anticipated. We, fellow RPMers left standing, are the crap left over.
...oh no...
I hope just didn't damn myself into a karma deficit. I do not want to be reincarnated as something...unsavory.

Re:NPR Update - 2008/04/29 05:49
Super congrats and confetti-throwings to all those artists who have been featured! If that's the end of it for RPM on NPR, maybe they just got overwhelmed trying to decide who to feature next, between the remaining hundreds of great artists. Seriously, that's not a task I'd be up to. I wouldn't be able to choose just a few out of all of them. There are just too many good ones!

Oh come now, this is negativity unbecoming and RPMer! We're better than that!
I wasn't really pooh-poohing Second Stage. That was just a bit of self-deprecatory fun. I'm grateful they paid attention to any of us at all and thankful for those diamonds in the rough they did give a buff to in the way of airtime. Of course, they missed a few of the best (like clique, obviously), but hey there's always next year. I'm sure RPM's public face time will only grow each time around. Second Stage is on the only the first big one to show up on the scene. We'll get our moments in the sun.

Re:NPR Update - 2008/04/29 10:11
I could be wrong, but I think they just stopped featuring RPM because it was a clean week break - Monday start something new. They didn't feature RPM during the weekends either, so it makes sense.
I am over the moon that they featured RPM at all - what great publicity! With any luck they'll do it again next year, though it'll probably be even harder to stand out because more and more people are signing up for this thing all the time.
I don't think slagging them off at this point is a great idea!!

A lot of us may have got left on the cutting room floor, so to speak. But I think the NPR exposure should have shed some light on all of us and for that I am grateful.

I think I understand that "Karma Police" song now...
I agree, we all know that there's no way they'd really "do justice" to RPM via a single podcast... there's just too much out there to grasp. In the end, a quasi-month of publicity for the project is a VERY good thing.
And for all of you out there that want to be on a podcast that won't discriminate, well, I've got one for you... MINE. I know, I know, I'm not a bastion of left-wing banter, and Carl Kassell doesn't hang out with me, but at least if you send me music, it will be 'casted.

Re:NPR Update - 2008/04/29 19:52
National exposure is great and all, but all they gave us was 2 minutes each, for around 2 percent of our bands.
A more obvious (to me) outlet is all those local NPR stations around the country, most with interview shows, and all scraping to find topics of local interest. Local RPM artists seem like a natural way to kill an hour or more on a talk show. I know we've got at least six artists here in DFW; you'd think KERA would call a couple of us in for a longer conversation, since they're the ones that bring the Sound Stage shows to the area to begin with. And interviewing more at once could generate a great back-and-forth of contrasting approaches to making music.
And the stations in all the other major cities could be doing the same thing.
Does anybody know if any of the stations around the U.S. have done this kind of thing yet?
More to the point, does anyone have connections?
The Sound Stage interviews were just a tease, and not much of a tease at that. I'd love to hear longer background stories on (and discussions among) many, many more of our folks.
Has anybody else been having ideas like this?

I even sent KERA a message at the beginning of the month explaining the thing going on with local artists. Did so for the regulars to like KDFI, KTVT, etc.
No bites whatsoever. No if we were the local gun club or duelists association they'd probably be all over it. But I was disappointed in KERA.

Re:NPR Update - 2008/04/29 20:47
That's an interesting idea. Minnesota Public Radio has a station called The Current in Minneapolis/St. Paul and Rochester that plays mostly indie rock stuff, and they feature a lot of local artists. Seems a natural that some RPM stuff could end up there but I don't know that they're particularly aware of or interested in us.
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to make the first contact. (Actually, I've been contemplating it for a while but have not given it enough serious attention to follow through on it.)

The challenge gets (I believe) absolutely no coverage in the UK whatsoever. Right, next year, I'm going to contact some of the magazine-format TV shows and let them in on it - they cover far less interesting stuff. Yes, decided.

Re:NPR Update - 2008/04/29 21:29
I don't think local NPR affliates are the answer, the one in Atlanta mostly plays syndicated shows. College radio is a much better bet. And you want them to play your music, not interview you, right?
I do PR for a living, and when pitching a story to the media, you must have some sort of "hook" to get their interest. I can tell you my hook, but chances are it won't work for you, but it's gotten me some coverage.
Your own Hook will vary, Cap'n, but just completing the RPM Challenge probably ain't enough on its own. Especially in a major market or when pitching to radio or music magazines or blogs. If those places have heard of RPM, unfortunately a lot of their perception is that RPM is for "amateurs" in that a "real" band wouldn't put a deadline on their creative statement. Or at least that's some of the actual feedback I've run across.
So what to do? Playing real shows lends a credibility that cuts thru the clutter of a zillion other folks pushing their idea for their 15 minutes of fame. Look online and find blogs or internet radio that cater to the type of music you're doing (yeah, Joshua, that raises the ugly "G" word, but that's life). Figure out how what you've done is interesting to a certain crowd, then pitch yourself to them.
Just my $0.02 and worth less than that. Now go ahead and kill my karma for not saying something completely positive.
that's a joke.

I should have known you'd be on top of it, Mick. Thanks once again for your action ...
It's also just like you to have the answer: So what kind of guns should we buy? Think we'll have to be cross dressers too, just to get their attention? My wife has some lovely outfits ...
KERA's having their local pledge drive, and their people are always saying stuff like, "We're an important part of your community!" Maybe the only arts they're interested in are the ones with functions you attend in tuxedos ...
