Re:Song fodder - 2008/05/05 23:53I am not prone to talking about what my songs are about, usually. "Don't Talk To The Driver!" is my mantra about what I do...
So, I will play it terse. If you want a copy of a particular song's lyrics to see if I am just bulls***ing you here in this post, let me know. I have been known to BS...
Way Too Long: Confusion of denial Any Other Way: Seduction in a time of death Pretty Voices: Loss of forgiveness She Never Sees: Recognition of deception Nillson: Resignation of conditions Find A Lover: Hmmm... Devil In You: Recognition of denial Back Of My Hand: Overwhelmed by confusion 70: Pleading for clarity Fists of Fury: Love is a Phoenix
There is a cycle here if you follow it closely...
There you go. If anyone is really interested, my 2007 stuff has stories too.
Cheers,
Gary

Inasmuch as a name or title can inspire an instrumental, in Greek mythology, Hippolyte is the Amazonian queen who possessed a magical girdle she was given by her father Ares, the god of war.Hippolyte Pixii in 1832 built an early form of an alternating current electrical generator. Fly to the Sun - undying love. Westward - time flying by, rushing into the future, the older you get the faster the years tick by. Eulogy:February 5th - the horrific tornadoes that tore through Arkansas, Kentucky and Alabama that day. Runnin' Outta Time - again, time passing too quickly. The end of February! John's Rag - John Fahey Sunwind - the rolling reverb guitar effect in Logic.

Re:Song fodder - 2008/05/06 02:14From 2007--Thou Shalt...Drawing inspiration (however obliquely) from the Ten Commandments (not the movie version, but the book).
1. I got something to say. Listen to me...listen to meeee!!
2. Thou shalt have no other gods. A repudiation of celebrity culture, american idolatry, and myspace.
3. Thou shalt not use my name in vain. Road life is tough and life-killing...show some appreciation, please.
4. THou shalt remember the sabbath. Wishing for the perfect holiday. Part tourism commercial jingle, part long-distance love song.
5. Honor they mother and father. I'm a good boy. Honest I am.
6. Thou shalt not kill. Lots of ways to die and kill.
7. Not commit adultery. I love you, baby...you and only you.
8. Don't steal. I didn't write the lyric (just rewrote it a little). To me it's about getting what you're due.
9. Not Lie. Originally a bald faced anti-bush, anti war rant taken from an internal extrapolation of a real dinner time conversation/sermon delivered by a right-wing in-law.
9b. The replacement, as the original was just a bit too close to home. About a serial bail-jumper's adventures with a determined bail-bondsman.
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's life. Ultimately a tale about the inevitability of bad endings.
All dark? All have darkness and all have humor. There is no light without dark. There is no dark that can't be penetrated by light. I hope I did good.

Re:Song fodder - 2008/05/06 04:58As far as lyrics go, I totally dropped the ball in 2008. I don't have a single spoken/sung word of my own on this recording. After reflection, however, the songs really are about something, though.
Tracks 1 - 5 are mostly Ear Candy. They all take their titles from dictionary entries or similar dada-inspired sources. I tried to match the title to what I perceived to be the mood of the song. 1. the apparent effect of unity generated by a series of discrete events (think motion picture). This kind of sums up the collection of disparate ideas to follow. 2. storm on an alien world. From far away. The human landing party relaxes with tequila sunrises. It sets up an almost 'ambient' mood. 3. atoms playing a kind of cooperative game. This is the microcosmic perspective of the previous movement's storm. 4. at night a plague of insects descend upon the human landing party. to seek respite, the humans call the Orkin man, who arrives with energy weapons. Do the humans prevail? 5. festive conclusion. If you read it the right way, the insects are celebrating the departure and/or extermination of the invading alien humans.
Tracks 6 - 10 take their lyric from Mick's Hitting the RPM Wall. It is a musical journey perilously close to those taken by the prog-rockers of the late 60s and early 70s - only without the drugs (and most of the talent!) It only briefly recalls the distant storm on an alien world (or in my head!).

Re:Song fodder - 2008/05/06 17:50damn, i had to look up the tracks to remember the song order now! lousy short term memory, but who can i blame but myself for that.
1. walking with a stranger: somebody i know very well and somebody i just started to "get to know" 2. cold front: instrumental, it's not really about something. sounds dark and foreboding. 3. country girl: a bar, a whore, a preacher, all in a small town 4. lucky us: the "stranger" from track 1, explained in depth in the style of dylan's "isis" 5. nightlife: another instrumental, spacey. 6. artificial heart: didn't realize at the time but it's about falling from grace but still getting by 7. the bend: looking back at a road trip from '01 8. wander: instrumental, improvised and directionless. 9. simple things: the line "the simple things not fit for kings, we celebrate in everything" says it best

Re:Song fodder - 2008/05/06 17:54Here are mine, not sure if you have heard them or not
1 - About getting a traffic ticket and having to go to a safe driving course
2 - About two people having each other, and no matter what happens, that is all they need
3 - About how some people make mistakes in their young life without thinking of the future
4 - Instrumental
5 - People in the world have differing opinions and have trouble seeing other peoples point of view
6 - The only thing faster than the speed of light, is the speed of thought.
7 - A relationship that is based only on sex.
8 - How a man can be in touch with his feelings. I find it funny that the song is called "Masculinity", yet it is one of the most feminine songs i have ever written.
9 - About a man who went to jail for 20 years, and the prison system actually worked, he felt remorse, and realized the error of his ways.
10 - I just wanted to do something funny and short to round up to 10 tracks.
If you listen, i hope you enjoy!

Re:Song fodder - 2008/05/13 23:01Sheesh... I hadn't thought about how depressing most of "Raw" really is. But it fits the general mood of my life, this year. (O.o)
1. Down on the Brazos-- Depression and suicidal thoughts, following significant-other infidelity 2. One Wish-- Depression, again...looking for hope 3. Long Road Home-- Homesickness, disappointment (I wrote this lyric when I was only 17...waaaaaaay back in 1981, before I'd ever even left home) 4. Wrong Side of Love-- Unluckiness in love, emotional pain 5. Deep Blue-- Creepy love for a ghost woman 6. Nobody Home-- Depression, suicidal feelings and social withdrawal 7. Black Molly-- Speed/amphetamine addiction 8. Ballad of the Beam-- the only non-dark song on the album, a silly story written for the main character of my Western novel series. It's about trying to get away from ugly women in a bar, after getting drunk with one.
