NEW YORK CITY listening party? - 2008/03/07 17:55 Hey friends!

I'm in New York!

I know a few of you must be as well!

We should get together and DO this listening party thing!!!

Anyone have ties to a bar/cafe/whatever? Thoughts? My vote is downtown, somewhere around the Village, Greenwich, Union Square, etc...but that's just me being selfish and wanting to hang out where I usually hang out...

Any thoughts? Let's make this so!

(or am I missing something? is there one set up already?)

PAZ!

Robby

Re:NEW YORK CITY listening party? - 2008/03/07 18:25 I'm game....

If this was a Monday I'd invite everyone to the Baggot Inn (82 W. 3rd St) where I run an open mic on Mondays. It's a great space, but we can't do the listening until after the nights bands are done.

But in that neighborhood, I bet we can find something. There's always Washington Square Park, it should be nice by the end of March!

And if anyone is in the area on a Monday night, come down to the Baggot and introduce yourself. I'm the paler of the two guys who lake turns behind the board, the one on the djembe.

Check out my album, all tracks available through:

A different song, in a different language, from several different planets, telling the most ancient shared tale from another galaxy.

NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/07 18:33 Hey, we've been looking to start a New Jersey listening party, but it might make sense to join forces. Perhaps everyone in the general NYC area should just listen their locations, and then we can settle on a location of common ground.

We're in Woodbridge NJ, (Middlesex County) which is less than an hour's train ride into Manhattan.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/10 17:04 I asked a couple of local places and the Friday date seems to be a problem with them. They seem to think that I should do "a rental" to use the space on a Friday.

I am a cartoonist for a local paper here in dumbo and the publisher is seeing what he can do as well.

I would say at this point it is not looking good but I am still persuing. There is at least one more place I have played music at that might be OK with doing this and my Publisher thinks it should not be a big problem but he will be in Seol Korea that day.

Will see and keep you posted.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/11 16:39 Hey guys!

It's great to see you're trying to organize something for the NYC area. As soon as you get some details nailed down, let me know and I'll post it on the site.

Also, a public venue would be great, but don't overlook the possibility of doing it at someone's apartment. I'd hate to see it not happen because it's tough getting a bar or coffee shop on a Friday night.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/11 18:04 When I spoke to my publisher last night both he and I know the owner of rebar retreat. If they do not have anything going on it might not be a problem to get the front area for the RPM challenge. The problem is that as a popular bar at happy hour it will be otherwise crowded and though the front area has a jutebox it has to compete against the music in the main bar (it is all one large area with rought iron between them. It also could only accomidate around 30 people that could sit. It could be set up there but we thought the downstairs at the water street bar might be better as it has a pa and would acomidate a larger group of people (we are going to talk to them tonght).

My big problem is I have no idea how many people might be coming. I figure I could plan small like rebar and hope it does not get crazy or plan big and deal with the blowback if only ten people show up.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/11 18:27 I emailed Jason at rebar and he asked what time we were looking for so if you know him that would be great.

Anyone here attend the one in Brooklyn last year? If so, how many people showed up?

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/11 20:40 If you have emailed Jason and would like it there it is about a block from my house the owner knows both my publisher (Leo) and John (ME) from Dumbo Paneling (the paper). I think it will not be a problem setting it up there but hearing the music will be. He and I are going over tonight to chat with him to follow up.

We were also considering the Dumbo arts center space a large room with a PA and River Cafe Bar. Fridays at Rebar during happy hour it is pretty packed with regulars many times gets rented for special events. River Cafe has a basement that can easly accomidate a hundred folks with it's own pa soundsystem so everyone could hear each others material.

I don' t know if last years party relates well, it was in BedSty and not that easy to get to and might have scared off a few folks due to the it being in BedSty which is not the safest area of Brooklyn. Dumbo is very safe and easy to get to.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/11 20:53 Yeah, I know. I was just wondering how many people did show up.

That would be great if you can talk to Jason. There is more than one floor there, right? What if we did it in the coffee area instead or is that too small?

Anyway, talk to him and see what he says. He sounded mildly interested when I emailed him.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/11 21:19 As far as I know the Coffee area closes at 5pm it is kind of the bottom of the stairwell so it is kind of a nook no seating.

The bar is kind of set up in a odd way the bar proper is set up to have rought iron gates closed during the day (the building also has offices on the same floor as the bar.

The front area which is where the RPM party would be is on the other side of the bars in a area that surrounds the stairs this is open during the day and people from downstairs come up to to read the paper and drink their coffee.
at night it is just outside the gates of the bar and works as additional seating for the bar. In the picture this is the area you see through the open gates.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/12 12:08 So I went to Rebar last night and I think we are getting into the final phase. They have a new "game room" we may be able to use that room it has a stereo. The presently have a big event starting around 11 which should not be a problem. The smaller space is kind of sound proofed from the main bar. I am following up with a email to Jason and a call later today. When discussing it to the staff a nice gutar the bar said his friends had done a record this year, small world.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/13 00:53 I have to check if the Wi Fi works in the corner where the stereo system is but they do have wi fi in the front of the bar. I will test it before the party.

I don't think 6:30 will be a problem it is the time I am now quoteing with the ishish thing "after work". I will be getting there a little after that I think.

I think will also bring a small dj set up and two portable cd players in case there is some kind of issue on the feed. I am calling Jason now and will continue to follow up.

Please give me advise.

Will let you know if I can finaly get this confirmed tonight.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/13 05:03 I left a message for Jason and sent him an email. He told me that 6:30 should be OK.

Did you stop in and see him?

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/13 16:25 Sounds like you guys are ready to post this party - am I right?

We're planning to send out a mass mail regarding listening parties possibly today. If you give me the details soon-ish, I can get it up on the site and we can include it in the message.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/13 18:44 I have talked with Jason and he is calling me this afternoon when we are 100% inked into the low ryder room there seems to be no problems at this point. As soon as he calls this afternoon I will give a "green light" post. He needs to check his "office database" first. Last Hoop.

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/15 05:34 I am still working it out he seems to be getting pissed off. He has a death in the family. Don't know were you got the 25 number but this is a much smaller space than the river cafe and beer runs arround $10 a glass. It is also Time outs new bar of the year, they want to have the bar proper be a resturant by the end of the month.

I am still working on this but I think it is building towards him makeing me rent the bar and garenteed minimum at the bar. Ain't going there. At this point do you think that there will be more than 20 people there max?

Re:NY/NJ listening party - 2008/03/15 05:37 I didn't pick the 25 number...someone from RPM did.

We would probably have 4, maybe more once we know where it will be for sure.
