I Left My Muse In February... - 2008/04/09 23:03 So I gave myself a month off from music after the intensity of February and I sat down at the beginning of April to start work on my proper band's album. Nine days in and I've got nothing, nada, sweet FA. I'm worried that I'm all musiced out...

Re:I Left My Muse In February... - 2008/04/09 23:29 Is it because you're trying to write for them and not for yourself? Might not be as stupid as it sounds...but, then again, it might be.

Re:I Left My Muse In February... - 2008/04/10 00:49 Here, listen to this song: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6439562 . It will make you and go write something else (LOL). Maybe not, but another songwriting said that after listening, they did want to go off and play and write.

Try doing this - put your calendar back to February, and just pretend it's February all over again.

Let's pretend you're just starting your RPM 2008 album - right now..

Or, option B - you can build a time-travel device, go back to February, and then kidnap your Muse, stuffing her in a box (with breathing holes, obviously), and then return to April with her.

However, time travel is admittedly a messy business - by interfering with the past, you could horribly ruin the current timeline. (We could have those Sentinels running amuck, without any good X-Men characters to fight them off.)

Or even worse, you could cause time and space to collapse inwards on itself. (I really hate it when that happens.)

Re:I Left My Muse In February... - 2008/04/10 19:07 Another option:

Come up with a title of a song - and then write the song itself using the title as a starting point.

In other words, reverse the process.

Also, when stuck, find an online deck (or better yet, a hard copy version) of Oblique Strategies (by Brian Eno & Peter Schmidt) and learn to use it. When you get stuck, it comes in mighty handy...

P.S. I really need to get back to the "So... Now What?" thread... perhaps later tonight...

Re:I Left My Muse In February... - 2008/04/10 20:52 That "Oblique Strategies" link is fantastic! There is a scene in the movie "Slacker" that revolves around the cards, but I never knew that they were for real.

My oblique strategy for the day:

"Trust in the you of now"

That's a fine one!

I just drew from the online deck, and received:

Discover your formulas and abandon them

... which is fine advice - for any day of the week.

Re:I Left My Muse In February... - 2008/04/10 21:23 Ooops - I forgot to post a direct link to the online Oblique Strategies deck...

...so here it is:

Draw a card from the deck...

I tested the link in preview, and drew this one:

Convert a melodic element into a rhythmic element

Damn, I just love this thing.

Re:I Left My Muse In February... - 2008/04/11 01:06 Great writers, artists and musicians alike have to hit the road from time to time to recharge. Paris. New Orleans. San Francisco. Cities with a pulse and lots of energy and the center of many books. Of course, there are others. But you can't put that much energy out, like we do in February, without filling up some where. Nothing like a road trip to gain some perspective, get some fresh exposure and meet new and strange people. Not sure where you're at, but if you've not been to Vegas, throw a clean pair in a bag and catch a flight.

Everything is available in Vegas 24 / 7. Tell me, have you ever walked down the street with a cup shaped like a football full of beer? Ever played slots in a 7/11? Ever seen a glass paramid with a light shooting upwards so bright that it can be seen from space? Ever ridden an outdoor rollercoaster at the top of a 20 story hotel? Ever seen the Statue of Liberty surrounded by sand and it wasn't a movie? No? Don't you think its about time?

Vegas! Yeah, baby, yeah!

Gee. That sounds like a good title for an album. Strangely familiar, too.

Damn. I wish I'd thought of that a couple of months ago...
