Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/28 22:24 Debra Farris -> Willow Run What a voice. She was at SXSW and I missed her! Too bad. From my 2008 Jukebos search "sky"

Probably just me but I'm digging "vie delaveris". Reminds me of many a drum circle I've attended. But where's the fire? And the "smoke"?

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/29 12:25 Surprisingly I'm listening to Sister Savage for the first time. This record is awesome. There's definitely some PJ Harvey and some Massive Attack in there, but then she is from the same area.

Gnudutch's "The Woz Went Down To Georgia" is a great version of The Devil Went Down To Georgia featuring Steve Wozniak going down to Georgia Tech to challenge the local Tetris champion.

Chris Rutherford has produced an excellent Electronic/Industrial album sounding a bit like a male version of Evanessence or a more melodic NIN. Thief is the standout track for me.

Hipnodidjno by Muzicprodukt is the most engaging purely electronic song I've come across so far. Kind of has a Didj like drone rumbling along underneath interesting beats.

And Phil-In-The-Blank's Duracellulite kicks ass. I just wish it was longer.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/29 21:09 I have just discovered the album "Party In Quebec" by Juor. OMG, I would so totally buy this if it was on sale. This NEEDS your attention now if you've ever liked anything put out on SST.

Listening to the Jukebox makes me think I've stepped up a gear with the musicians I'm mixing with and it's going to be harder and harder to make the standard. I'm feeling genuinely humbled to be amongst such company...

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/30 01:42 Favorite music I've come across so far in the jukebox is Entity & DJ Snyder's "Calvin & Hobbes." The intro, a "300" parity about the RPM Challenge, is pretty funny. This is a very tight hip hop album that sounds very professional.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/30 02:40 Well, Wendy has started digging deep through the Jukebox - and so far, she's talking about these folks:

Tim Theriault - My Old Soul The whole album is absolutely solid - she has a hard time picking a favorite - but says that Cut To Fade & All Your Games are must listens.

Derita Studio - Take Time She likes this one a lot as well - another solid album from start to finish - and says that Empathy is a stand out cut.

6 Notes - this one really speaks to the ambient/edged/electronic side of our sensibilities ... check out Semolina, Bodie's Prayer, The Road To Carson, Go West - aw hell, check out the whole disc. It's all good, and no two cuts alike. (Hmmm - sounds familiar... )

Cafe Exotica Yowza. This is mighty, mighty fine. Growing Through is an absolutely killer cut. This one took me places. Not your average electronic...

kirk & wendy, aka, acl, aka another cultural landslide

P.S. Just as I post this, Derita posted ahead of me. Sheesh. Listen to them anyway.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/30 03:28 Oh wow - I finally start getting to a week's worth of email while listening to the Jukebox - and suddenly something plays that just catches your attention and blows your thoughts out of your head...

... and in this case, it's Blue Apple Yokahama's Red Brick, Red Jacket.

Damn. I wasn't expecting this...

Blue Day sounds like freakin' early Tracy Nelson.

Spring Fever so reminds me of Beth Sorrentino's (Suddenly, Tammy!) solo work I had to do a double take to see that I was still on the same album.

Nanimo Kamo is just friggin' awesome.

And River, just piano & sax, is just so damn solid I listened to it twice - with sax work that reminds me of Andy McKay (Roxy Music). Yowza.

This whole album is simple, yet brilliant. Great songwriting - simply performed & produced. There's not a single weak cut on this album.

And that stupid Genre list says this is Easy Listening?? Horse Hockey.

It's just effin' great.

Mick - I have to agree that _11:34's In the Thick of It is a good one this year. In fact, I posted a review of it just last night over in the "Critique thread." I love the SST feel of it - you don't hear stuff like that anymore (or at least I don't)

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/30 06:59 So far, I've only really listened to the metal section >_>

But, my thoughts on that...

It Has to End Someday fucking rocks.
The Sun Came Up Upon the Left - great doom metal feel.
Walking Void - Bass-heavy improv = win.
Actually, I like all of the metal selection this year, those are just my recommendations for non-metal heads.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/30 19:30 I have to plug Zef Zipfer. Nice ambient, jazzy guitar on both his albums, if yer into that kind of thing. On his heavier lead guitar squalls, reminds of Terje Rypdal.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/30 20:21 I have been listening in tha background of daily activities, so I keep missing who si who, but I can definitely say that Gary Fox's album smokes! ACL's entry is pure magic, and Sister Savage's offering is pure eargasm material.

There's lot;s more, I'm in the process of making some playlists.

Quite humbling to be in such company...the more I hear, the less proud of my cd I am...lol

WOW...thanks for pimping us, Jay... now we're going to pimp you right back!

The Score is rock solid... 1138 Overture, Villainous Backstory, & Pray Sallah are AWESOME.

You have NOTHING to be ashamed of - this is an EXCELLENT disc.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/30 23:45 I think my favorite entry so far this year is the instrumental album "Contagious Asymmetry" by Sonic Extrusion Dies. VERY elegant and mathy basement-noiserock and the title says it all.

Here are some of my other personal favorites so far:
am/fm dreams
senza valore
late night laundry
angie fights crime
damage/damage-control
entity & dj snyder

I still have a lot more listening to do. Maybe I'll get through it all by next year. Maybe not.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/31 03:12 Sampling random tracks from the jukebox, I'm very impressed by the depth and variety of the talent here. These are some of the albums that I just had to hear more of:

Tungsten Shadow "frozen."
- really beautiful acoustic guitar-oriented instrumental music. Impressive in both composition and execution, this is an exemplary album.

Foreign Bodies "Jamboree" - If Ministry and Flipper entered into some unholy union, this could be the offspring. It's certainly not going to be for everyone, but I love it!

Joseph Gergis "The Darker Light" - Great electronica, this reminds me a lot of Orbital.

Pyotr "[transmit:_STATIC]" - reminds me a little of the Strokes or Franz Ferdinand, there's a lot here to like!

Flipping the Pig "My Heroic Cadences" - I saw the band name, and just had to check it out. I'm glad I did...there is just something oddly enchanting about this album. Great stuff.

Bookshop of the Advanced Apes "The Last Seconds"
- Normally, I don't think I'd be including such a sample-heavy album as this, particularly one labeled as "hip-hop/rap!" But there are some definite standouts on this album like "The Nothing" and "Troubles w/Sara" that I totally dig.

On a personal note, there are also those I'd like to thank not only for contributing great music to RPM, but for all their encouragement to myself and others:

SiameseDrummers, Another Cultural Landslide, Michelangelo, Dazzleships

Not only are they all talented songwriters and musicians, but they're just great people, and I'm very grateful for their kind words and support. They are truly a credit to the RPM spirit...go listen to them if you haven't already! Now!

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/31 03:27 Digging the groove of War Drums - The Prelude by Eron - Dripping in reverb and building up the tempo, as a rhythmist I have to appreciate this. Your mileage may vary.

+10 for Blue Apple Yokohama - she dun great this year. Man oh man can she sing or what?

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/31 11:48 I am currently drawing up my top 10 songs, but will say at this point -

Kristen Miller is the sound I've been searching for! The mournful sound of a cello has never failed to stop me in my tracks (so much so that I bought myself one for my 30th but am still waiting for the time to teach myself to play it, as apparently nobody teaches such exotic instruments in this place... ), so combine that with the voice of an angel and the words of an incredibly gifted poet and I am quite disarmed.

More to come when my list is complete!

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/31 17:27 Yes, ditto the above two gentlemen. Thank you. We're happy & honored to be among all you folks.

And if anyone hasn't heard Alchemist Corpse Rite's disc, go listen right now; My Voice In Her Heart may very well be the stand-out cut we've heard from this year's challenge (and that's really saying something). Hell, it gives us goosebumps every time we hear it.

And damn it, I REALLY need to listen to this year's Dazzleships disc - I keep reminding myself I need to listen to it - and then my brain farts.

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/31 18:00 I intend to post throughout the day in this same entry - save a little space that way.

John Pena - Winter Song - Wanna hear a singer? Wow, this guy has an amazing voice.
Eric Strahmeyer - nice organ groove on Take More - whole thing is awesome
Sandra Koski - Another year of solid folk.
Solamo - Ambient Electronica, lush, deep, rich, good, especially Saturn Lost

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/03/31 19:40 i had the RPM radio streaming for a while this evening and took note of a couple of choice cuts, which i'm now re-enjoying on the (fantastic) jukebox.

namely:

new drugs - atlas in mexico
i absolutely love this. perfect blend of ethereal atmosphere and grounded (grounding?) rhythm. i have just listened to this one song four times in a row - looking forward to checking out the rest of the album.

also:

shane faubert - back where i started
i'm liking the melody;
really liking the transition into the middle bit with the pause;
and loving the pink sweaters!

Re:Pimpin Fellows in 2008 - 2008/04/01 17:33 While I was DJing my 12 hour listening party set last weekend there was just SO SO SO much good stuff! At the beginning I wondered how in the world I would be able to program a good mix for a 12 hour show, but the random stuff I was able to play just blew me away time and time again! I wish I'd have had a 60 hour show to play ALL the preferred tracks...(well...maybe not quite that long..probably have to break it up a bit )

Anyway I think we should get our own top 10 lists on a thread. Top 10 lists are so New Year's Eve, but hey. March 1 is like New Year's Day in RPM isn't it? For now though I wanna give props to the track that really made me sit up and take notice 'cause its like nothing else I've heard...

Los Tres Hornitos "Frightening Mary the Actuary"

These guys are fresh and will tickle your eardrums until you yell "Uncle!". Definately don't overlook them.

Have a good week my talented friends!

Sean Longstreet - Solo Improvisations
Sean duets with himself on loop pedal.

Bob Halperin - Improv
Fantastic fingerstyle "American Primitive" acoustic guitar.
