1. the Genre that RPM wants you to give for your album when submitted
2. The Jukebox itself allowing you to modify genre of the whole album and/or the ability to edit genres at the track level.
1 - - not a factor of the Jukebox at all - or not yet - RPM has their own guides in place currently and require a 'genre' to be associated to the album entry, that's where the 'genre-agnostic' thing comes in - I don't want to discuss this further as it's an RPM leadership item to be discussed between April 08 - Jan 31 09
2 - YOU WILL be able to edit genres as desired.. not from a drop-down.. but Free text.. so who cares what you type for a Genre.. the Jukebox certainly wont.
Then you ask about Keywords.. well those would also be considered 'Tags' which we are intending to roll-out on the Track-level so that bands can Tag tracks as well as Users... so.. we're moving in that direction eventually for Searching! But it's not a TRUE search, it's more of a filtering at this point.. you'll see...

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/25 02:02How you guys develop the visualizer / beat detective in flash ? That’s gold! As a developer and former flash developer, I’m not aware of flash having such capabilities (native that is).
A year ago I had to develop a music beat detective for some dancing Christmas lights, the 2 best options I found was a C++ visualization plug in for Winamp or C# code. I went with C#.
Any insights into how you guys made the flash visualizer work ?

Oh the application is built in FLEX - and that Visualizer is an audio display component that someone built.. there are a bunch of ones.. in the new jukebox we have just a basic 32 line graphic EQ for simplicity.. and will hopefully get a similiar big fullscreen one soon again.
I'll find out what the component we used is called - but I'm sure there are hits if you Google Flex Audio Visualizer Component.
Anyhoo..

We just got the final 2008 library file from RPM HQ and are finally merging 2008 and 2007 databases together with the User Account system from this here website.. Things are - expectedly - a little out of synch - so were' running lists and identifying the records which need manual fixes.. which apparently - is not all that bad.. under 200 bands need to be checked out.. which is pretty easy when you get going.
There are like 1300 +/- or so unique bands total from 2007 and 2008 - so not bad!
To get the stuff working right - WE ARE TAKING DOWN THE OLD JUKEBOX! Say goodbye to it.. or 'good riddance!' whichever suits you..
There are some features that we may revise on the new Jukebox too.
There are fundamental RPM tenets we need to respect and the 'snapshot in time' of submitted material is one of them. So, there will be some restrictions to editing Album information. Additionally, not to start a whole big thing about it.. but we will likely have a restriction on Genre adjustments to start.. - but that will open up after launch with broad Genre selections and Tagging.. so it's not a permanent thing..
MORE SOON!

Album art? Where are you getting that from - do we have somewhere to submit a file?

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/28 17:59Looks and works great so far! Leaps and bounds better than last year (and actually on time!)
Though... I could do without the auto-play upon opening. I like to be able to navigate to page without having to worry about whether inappropriate loudness or swearing will occur.
Also, Tess, make sure your RPM page isn't cached... you may have to reset your browser to get to the 08 jukebox.

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/28 18:03Damn, gonna have to wait until home to see this...it requires flash player 9, which apparently this computer does not have, and I'm not allowed to download...pretty much anything...to the computers here at work.

What is the purpose of the home page? It looks like we are not on the front page of the jukebox player. Should I be worried about that?
Thanks,

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/28 19:37oops - it is asking me to download flash 9 every single time I try and get in. That doesn't seem like a good thing! Windows Vista.

I have little sleep and much to do for work today interestingly enough..
But Playlists - login, go 'create' a playlist.. .it will be blank. It shows up in the Floating version of the Player.. so you need to DRAG that sucker off the bottom and un-dock it..
Then you need to find songs, and drag them RIGHT ON TO THE NAME of the play list in the Floating Player.. it's again - a little weird to explain, but very easy once you've done it, once..
THe HOME page is RANDOM - and it's only 100 songs.. and the default list is 2008 - you can adjust what years you wish to display on the home page and hi REFRESH..
I'm gonna paste the email we sent to everyone in this thread...

1. User Accounts All participating RPM Challenge Bands can sign in using their existing RPM website account login information. You can access and edit your Band and Album text and image information displayed in the Jukebox. The general public can create accounts for the purposes of creating and saving playlists!
2. Playlists! Did I say Playlists? Why yes! Once logged in - all users can make and save multiple playlists! Jukebox engineers have verified that you can add any number or combination of songs to a playlist! Create a new playlist on the Playlists tab, then drag any song from the library, home page or an existing playlist onto the playlists window of the expanded player. You can rearrange songs, remove songs (using the delete key) and rate any song in your playlists. Ratings extend across all playlists and the library.
3. Floating Jukebox Player! Wait.. But the Player is DOCKED at the bottom! Well, you can undock it by simply grabbing the textured block to the left of the Playback controls - and drag that sucker into the main area... it will automatically expand and reveal all kinds of band and album info! You can minimize that info by clicking on the little black arrows. When logged in - your playlists will be located under the band and album info in their own collapsible section! WOOT!
4. The Random 100 on the Home Page What says RPM better than RANDOM! So we figured giving you the ability to have a random playlist pre-loaded for your review.. was well... AWESOME! So we gave it to you.. and if you notice the bottom left of the screen has a 'Refresh' button with a small arrow next to it. Click on that and reveal a YEAR SELECTOR so you can filter by one or multiple years for the Ranodm list!! Simply check off your year(s) desired and hit Refresh. Currently 2006 is disabled, because we ran out of time and haven't loaded the 2006 albums - yet!
5. Library - the meat and potatoes The Library is a list of all Tracks sorted alphabetically by Band... more than sixteen thousand tracks! You can use the text field to enter in sorting criteria and any track with the word you type in there - will be filtered into a smaller list. Go a head and type in a color or emotion or genre.. it sorts on all that! OR a Band (go figure) and you'll get all the songs from a particular band! SO FAST - SO COOL.
6. We are still in the process of uploading album artwork; you can help by uploading your own!
What to do now: Check it out! Log in and make a playlist! Update your information in the jukebox! Explore, listen and have fun! Send us feedback and lete us know what you think -- this is YOUR jukebox.
What NOT to do now: This is a brand-new release of a brand-new system -- when you find an error, a glitch, or an omission -- which you will -- do NOT shriek and pull your hair and sob. Rather, think to yourself "Ah-ha! I have a golden opportunity to help the jukebox engineers debug this new system and make it better! I'm going to send them an e-mail right now using the "contact the jukebox team" button on the home page to let them know what I've found!"
Enjoy!

Re:Jukebox Update - Pulling old one down! - 2008/03/28 19:41The front page is a random-load sampling of only a few RPM tracks... it refreshes every time you reload. It's just a good way to get a random sampling.
It is a little confusing, admittedly... it could use a title before all the album art, so people know what's going on.
The thing I'm wondering after first look is:
1. Will there be a way to click on an band name and see all their tracks?
2. I uploaded a "band picture" but it doesn't show up in the player under Band Info.... is that where it's supposed to show up? Because I can't figure out where else that info would be relevant on jukebox.
Also, a reiteration of the removal of autoplay when yo load the jukebox... the first song that came up was "Why Not Dildos?"
It's a fine song, but I don't want it automatically running on my computer.

I don;t get this. I use "NoScript" plugin to Firefox which let's me pick which scripts to run site by site. So I don't get those annoying Flash ads or whatever.
The Jukebox works fine without scripts enabled. I can search play all that goodie, goodie, after enabling the main Jukebox flash player. I can't login in and I can't use the features like the tearable player.
Could we PLEASE get a version of the Jukebox that's doesn't version check my Flash version (because your script can't detect it) and will just trust I have Flash 9 installed like I do. I appreciate the help and all automatically sending me to the website to get what I need, but I already have it. And it' snot just us Linux guys -- it's also us 64-bit guys since 64-bit Flash don't yet exist.
Because of this: <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- // Version check for the Flash Player that has the ability to start Player Product Install (6.0r65) var hasProductInstall = DetectFlashVer(6, 0, 65);
// Version check based upon the values defined in globals var hasRequestedVersion = DetectFlashVer(requiredMajorVersion, requiredMinorVersion, requiredRevision);
if ( hasProductInstall && !hasRequestedVersion ) { // DO NOT MODIFY THE FOLLOWING FOUR LINES // Location visited after installation is complete if installation is required var MMPlayerType = (isIE == true) ? "ActiveX" : "PlugIn"; var MMredirectURL = window.location; document.title = document.title.slice(0, 47) + " - Flash Player Installation"; var MMdoctitle = document.title;
AC_FL_RunContent( "src", "playerProductInstall", "FlashVars", "MMredirectURL="+MMredirectURL+'&MMplayerType='+MMPlayerType+'&MMdoctitle='+MMdoctitle+"", "width", "100%", "height", "100%", "align", "middle", "id", "Jukebox", "quality", "high", "bgcolor", "#869ca7", "name", "Jukebox", "allowScriptAccess","sameDomain", "type", "application/x-shockwave-flash", "pluginspage", "http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" ); } else if (hasRequestedVersion) { // if we've detected an acceptable version // embed the Flash Content SWF when all tests are passed AC_FL_RunContent( "src", "Jukebox", "width", "100%", "height", "100%", "align", "middle", "id", "Jukebox", "quality", "high", "bgcolor", "#869ca7", "name", "Jukebox", "allowScriptAccess","sameDomain", "type", "application/x-shockwave-flash", "pluginspage", "http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" ); } else { // flash is too old or we can't detect the plugin var alternateContent = 'Alternate HTML content should be placed here. ' + 'This content requires the Adobe Flash Player. ' + '<a href=http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash/>Get Flash</a>'; document.write(alternateContent); // insert non-flash content

Autoplay.. I agree actually for that very reason.. we're working through that one..
Hey.. also.... Layout of the Home page goes Band, Album, Song.. what do you mean it could be more clear? We went back and forth on this so I do know what you mean.. but now what your suggesting..

Re:Jukebox Update - Pulling old one down! - 2008/03/28 19:47Mos, yeah, that's what I figured. Can you see my band image in the player? Because I cannot, even though it's there in my profile.
Also, tried updating my artist info... but the revised info doesn't replace the old on the player. Seems to be either a refresh issue or a disconnect between the player and the profiles.
If you're referring to my comment about confusing, I meant that the front page's inclusion of 100 songs is confusing, because nowhere on that page does it say what those 100 discs are! Are they featured artists? Random? The only songs available? How is the normal user supposed to know?
If it said "Random 100" or something for the TITLE OF THE SECTION, right under that line where the intro is, people would know what the heck it all means.

Unfortunately, all my tracks are listed under the erroneous band name "Interstellar". We are not Interstellar, we are Skidoo! I've emailed the jukebox team, so hopefully this can be fixed before the party...
If I had a suggestion, it'd be the inclusion of a volume control in the player. For some reason, my laptop likes to blast my eardrums off, but if I turn down the master volume, it all sounds a bit weak. Not to worry though - I won't be using the lappy tonight.
One more thing... Is there any way to hear what everyone else is listening to, like last year? Shared experience is good
All this hard work is really, really appreciated, by everyone!

Re:Jukebox Update - Pulling old one down! - 2008/03/28 21:00OHHHH --- Crap.. yeah' Because of tonight's volumous amount of users - we're running a longer cycle of DB refresh to increase performance.. the Server generally refreshes the DB every 1/2 hr or something.. but we're up to like 6 hrs or somthing.. I'll check.. but that's probably it..
Sorry we've been running full-tilte for 4 weeks on this.. and it's been nutty.. So I'm all over the place..
I loaded like 400 or so album/band images this past week.. alone.. so I know it works.
