2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/15 06:37
Click above for full size screenshot! This is of a 'Logged In' User View and the interface is not skinned yet.. Still working out the Theme..

We'll roll it out a few days before the official RPM Global listening party weekend.. But here's a preview!

1. Band Logins! Based on your RPM Website Username/Password. Edit Band and Album Info for 2007 and 2008 - 2006 coming later this Spring.

2. Home Page will include special cool things in the future.. If time permits, before launch, we're shooting for having a Album Thumbnail Browser of randomly selected Albums, possibly broken up by year only for differentiation, and when able a Tag Cloud or something like that.

3. Playlists! Available to Logged in People.. Oh did I mention the General Public can create Accounts too? They don't have album or band editing needs, so that won't apply but they will be able to add/edit playlists. We hope to have Sharing working.. but creating and storing ANY NUMBER of playlists is going to Rock..

4. Text Based Library Sorter! Wentz will LOVE This.. type in ANYTHING in the Search field there in the upper left and you get a filtered list from ALL Tracks with the letter combo anywhere in the band/album/track names or genres.. In my screen shot I typed in 'gun' and pulled up a whole list of bands with 'gun' matches and have been listening to a wide range of tunes only linked by that. - IT IS MINDBLOWINGLY AWESOME! I love this feature.. How about a Thread about the "Word For the Day" and we randomly select words for the next day.. - listen to song or songs from that word (if found) and give reviews! When Playlist sharing is ready.. watch out..

5. The Floating Transport.. Playback controls - scrub bar etc, Playlists float around with this too.. as well as will Band and Album info for the track playing.. We think.. in small tabs there. It's currently hidden for dev purposes. Floating Transport will dock as a mini player when minimized and spring to life when told to!

6. The 'Star Rating' column is display only right now.. we're working out kinks with ranking, but this is the concept. If you 'right click' on any track - we can code a wide range of options to appear in a 'Get Info' link in the menu that pops up.. so, we may put the Rating option here, as well as the potential Tags for said track! And Bands could modify track data possibly...

OK.. .so the cats out of the bag a bit.. but you guys deserve an update! I'm working on interface and design theme exploration this weekend and we're still working out lots of data kinks with re-importing 2007 data.. so, bear with us! Best thing is - you guys can go fix all your own data! Reclassify your genre on a track by track basis (though, it's really not even relevant as the free text search is way cooler) and add lots of band details, updated album and band graphics and everything!

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/15 06:51 nice - looking forward to seeing the new player

i wonder - regarding the "connections" feature -

(and this has nothing to do with the player so maybe it needs to be posted elsewhere eh?)

In addition to people i actually know, I tend to add artists whose material i really like. it would be cool to be able to tag them and in my profile have links to "RPM artists I enjoy and think you (my listeners) should check out.

Not sure if it's apparent now - but it would be a cool feature - shouldn't be too hard to implement.

maybe i need to volunteer eh? since i'm a web/programmer/UI/standards/hack "Poseur" during my day job

MM

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/15 07:09 Oh.. I've got 'connections' on the horizon as a jumpstart for a 'Favorites' function..as we're not really synching the RPM website database and the Jukebox database in real time, yet.

Hmm... I may take your offer on help some time soon!

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/15 14:32 Wow, does this mean we'll be able to hear music from ALL THREE YEARS (2006, 2007, and 2008)??? That would be very cool.

You know... this is actually the way I listen to music when I'm not listening to an entire album. I'll type a random word like "don't" or "work" or something into iTunes and listen to the results of that.

So you're right, I will love that. Color me impressed.

Sharing playlists is a great way of letting people know what is good in there.

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/16 17:20 OK.. so here's TMI for any-and-all interested..

The biggest thing is that we've nailed the data import from iTunes.. all the problems with the 2007 Jukebox aside from being thin on functionality - was that the data import from a single iTunes library of all 2007 entries.. Well that's basically behind us.. we've got less than 100 tracks that need to be manually fixed - so 100 out of 8600 hundred or so.. AMAZING!

So all that work I've done to fix 2007's current Jukebox database.. well it will prove to be good training in my MySQL db mgt career.

Anyhow.. 2008's albums should be all taken care of by the RPM staff in a day or so.. and we will get all the MP3s moved over to the host server (god love firewire drives) and run the import of the 08 iTunes library file this week.. and pending any weird fiasco's.. we should get everything loaded in development DB for testing and review for next weekend.. and final tweaks heading to the last week of March! WOO!

Ken, our programmer - who's not even a musical-contributor, but is definately an RPM'er at heart.. is taking a day off for family today. So, RPM staff and I are working up our final launch punchlist so we're as complete as possible in our required last steps..

And I'm going to work on some Theme options for the various windows/panels and such (though it looks like a Flash application, it is Flex, so it's all CSS driven) as Dave from RPM HQ nailed a sweet header design yesterday and the beauty of the Jukebox is still grounded in its clean/concise design.

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/16 18:26 This is going to be so great.

Can't wait. Last year it took me nearly 4 months to get through the jukebox. It's pretty amazing that in 2007 I listened to RPM about 85% of the time.

Too bad I can't say the same for the live shows I've seen.

OK.. I was not drunk when I wrote this.. I was groggy as I hadn't had enough coffee.

What I meant to convey here is that LAST YEAR - when we imported the iTunes library it was all screwed up... Bands dissappeared, Albums of the same name got lumped together under one band.. songs of the same name all got replaced by other songs of the same name.. ETC. This was the #1 problem I fixed - things dissapearing because there were other instances of that same named thing (Album or Track) elswhere in the iTunes import.

So THAT is what is fixed.. and we re-imported the iTunes library file into our DB again with new adjustments.. and as a result of THAT we're missing less than 100 songs, out of all 8600... SO THAT is what is amazing. Our hope is 2008 goes just as smoothly with minimal adjustments required.. THEN 2006 later in the future.. when we've recovered from this push for 2008.

phew...

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/17 00:40 The screenprint definitely appeals to my inner geek.

(Actually, it's more of an outer geek - inner geek sort of suggests I can hide it from the outside world, which is kind of like a vampire hiding that he isn't able to get a suntan at the beach.)

Sweet, so if someone types in "mysterium" or "chroi" or "lyrae", they'll get some of my songs...hmmm...maybe the foreign languages weren't such a good choice for song titles.

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/20 15:21 Key question:

- Will there be a "Random Play"-button?

I would use such a feature extensively!

yeah.. by that I mean:

1. Unbridled access to 06, 07 and 08 Album libraries (06 may come post launch out of time considerations - but it's ready to load in)

2. User Account login using YOUR RPM WEBSITE U/P - or if you're the general public, you can create accounts.

3. Advanced Playlist creation (eventually sharing - didn't make the short list this Month) - Dave from RPM HQ dragged the entire 07 library into one playlist.. and it worked!

4. Homepage with 100 Track Randomizer with a sweet Album Thumbnail browser! Right now it's 100 random tracks - alphabetically sorted by band. So it's got some order to it.. but it's more of a method of getting folks introduced to the vast library! by the time 18000 or songs are loaded in here.. you'll be treated to a truly mindblowing random music listening experience.. We want to do non-alpha randomization.. some time post launch.

5. Band, Album Track info manangement by YOU GUYS following Login. Tim - we won't allow you to upload tracks.. but I am definately fixing your 07 album with better MP3 and properly ripped MP3s for 'as composed' accuracy reasons.

This service will allow you to put text and Images in for both Band and Albums.. Tracks - you can fix song titles and re-arrange sequence if needed.. OH -as well as Genre - which will from here on out be handled at the TRACK level in the Jukebox - DESPITE what your album may have been categorized as during the RPM HQ check-in purposes.. in 09 we'll be sure to have a a 'genre-agnostic' category for those who wish to not be categorized by trad-genres

6. The most amazing thing is the lightning fast library keyword sorter.. Type in LOVE - you'll get all songs with Love in the Track name, Band or Album fields.. so... you can imagine the power of that for making playlists..

OK I'm done now.. gotta continue uploading album images for y'al..

A big round of applause for you from this section of the world - this sounds like you & the good RPM coders have outdone yourselves.

Yup - this sounds mighty cool...

Re:2008 Jukebox v3.0 Preview! - 2008/03/23 06:57 Yes indeed. This is looking super sweet. Regarding:

09 we'll be sure to have a a 'genre-agnostic' category for those who wish to not be categorized by trad-genres

Wentz will also LOVE that, let me tell you! Though my wish would be:

wish item #1
...to take it even further by allowing us to write in our genre. If we want to be a part of the huge "alternative" genre, we'll pick "alternative." If we want to be the only one in the "post-alternative neo-industrial folk rock" genre, that's what we'll type in. It may not help anyone find our music, but at least we'd have a chance to describe our music in the words we choose.

wish item #2
Regarding the search function, it would be really awesome for there to be an optional key word field for out tracks, too. That way, we're not restricted in our song titles if we want our stuff to be found. By that I mean: adding "love song" in a keyword box would allow someone looking for love songs by searching for the word "love" to find love songs that don't necessarily have "love" in the title, (as I'd best most wouldn't.)

Another example: Michelangelo could add "mandolin" to the keyword field for "Aldeles (Spirit of Unity)" so that someone looking for mandolin music could find what he or she is looking for. (Not that Mick wants to attract any more attention to his mandolin skills than he already has...)

But none of that is important now. This is looking awesome so far and worlds better than last year's. Yee-haw!
