I'm going to try to record my entire CD on my Zoom H4, accompanied by my PDA and some guitar. I think I saw someone else here say they were going to try this.
My first song is an electronica/pop kinda thingy, with some admittedly depressing lyrics (sorry...). The mix at the end is kind of a mess, tho', so I'll have to clean it up somehow before burning it to CD as part of the album...I guess...

Sounds awesome! I love how it's under the genre 'space' in itunes..<br><br>Post edited by: My Imaginary Life, at: 2008/02/04 03:42
Wow. Thanks!
I had to pick a genre in Winamp when compiling the ID3 tag. 'Space' seemed the natural choice

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/04 13:34I've got a new one. It's feeling good in it's simplicity but I can also hear this being a bit more dressed up. Any thoughts? Comments on the mix would be appreciated, too. It was a bit of a challenge to know how to present it.
Oh Yeah it's called Termite Blues, though that doesn't really become clear from the lyric. Maybe it should be called "Bury My Body Above the Ground".
It's not a cheery summer pop hit btw

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/04 17:27I've made 6 songs so far (I've set a challenge for myself that they all have to be created in one session (mind you a session can last up to about 5-6 hours spread out the day). None of my songs took over a day, they are rather simple, but The Dunhill Initiative is not a place for complexity, rather a place for stupidity
Here's a couple of songs for you (to enjoy)
Song: Cigarette Artist: The Dunhill Initiative Linky: http://www.speedyshare.com/614117951.html Comments: It was 4am, I had nothing else to do, I was having a cigarette so I thought I'd make a song about it.
Song: Millimetres Artist: The Dunhill Initiative Linky:http://www.speedyshare.com/770719268.html Comments: I consider this the catchiest song I've made so far (It's also the longest at 3:21).

Possibly an odd one. I have another one too- it uses samples and is 18 minutes long. Is this allowed? "The Sentinel" at the same link as above. For some reason that site will only let mp3s be 8MB so only the first half is up there.

Yup. I just got back to this and it's all about gain.
Pre-amp and condenser and you're good. But....if you can only get one the SM57 will do ya if you get yourself a good little pre-amp. Many others have said the same thing but hearing the fuzz test, I'm in total agreement with them. It'll do wonders with your guitar as well.
For a condenser make sure you get one like the Behringer with phantom power.

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/04 22:43I just added another demo up on my Virb page. It's called "The End" and appropriately enough will be the last track on the CD. It has a hidden extra on the end which will not be revealed until the CD is released.
I checked out your songs, I like your sound! Very nice. The second one is definitely really catchy.

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/05 01:45Okay, have my second demo online. This one is called ‘Why Some People Disappear’. Wanted to do something less goofy than the first one. Tried to make this one somewhere between Film Noir and Modern Serial Killer. Hope I caught the right mood.

I think you caught the mood perfectly. I really like this one. It feels like it should be in some private detective movie with dames and cigarettes and shady alleyways.

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/05 02:36Thanks. That's the feeling I was shooting for. Wish my vocal skill were a bit more refined... too many years of cigarettes have taken their toll (although they may have actually been helpful on this track).

fog over the water - nothing but the human voice one step forward, one step back - egyptian lute, tabla, quena i found my little fishies! - the continuing saga of the search for... uhh, little fishies. ("little fishies, where are you?" appeared on last year's RPM entry.)
Also, since Virb has done Something Weird to their streaming engine (see the thread elsewhere in General Discussion) we've enabled the Download capability in our player on these songs so you can hear how they're supposed to sound. (Argh.)
kirk & wendy, aka acl, aka another cultural landslide
P.S. As much as MsKitty may hate for me to say this, Joshua's demo is friggin' gorgeous.

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/05 05:43I'm an RPM newbie. This has been a LOT of fun so far. Thought I'd post some initial roughs and see if there are any comments/criticisms.
So far I’ve got 3 things that are worth mixing down and sharing. I’ve also got 3 other things that are… um, not ready to share.
2) This a little punk rock thing ala Screeching Weasel. Don’t ask me why the banjo/acoustic is still in there - it’s kinda what started me off, and I’m leaving it for now. I’m hoping to have Ian put real bass on this (pardon my crappy bass playing). Drums need a lot of work, too (cause they SUCK): http://www.uncledig.com/RPM08/RPMbanjopunk.mp3
3) A very rough start for a song I’ve had in my head for almost a year. It’s going with the lyrics below. Again, drums need serious help: http://www.uncledig.com/RPM08/RPMMamaSays.mp3
Here are the lyrics for #3:
Mama said Promises Are made to keep And talk is cheap And true love cuts deep
Dark eyes Sunshine On the graceful and the wise On the pity and the lies And the beauty in your eyes Shines
Mama said Don’t get it in your head That you’re alone You make a home You bury my bones
Dark eyes Goodbye To the graceful and the wise To the pity and the lies To the beauty in your eyes Shines
Goodbye, goodbye Ruby Mae Sunshine, first class all the way Coast the car down the hill and sneak away Coast the car down the hill

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/05 06:39Ok guys.. really nice to check out recordings from here... here are my 2 offerings (so far)
Track one isn't really well mixed yet... I am quite happy with track 2 but I only made it tonight, I am sure I will find some flaws tomorrow when I wake up.

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/05 07:16Wow, a lotta of work going here! Here is another for the digi-pile. A rough mix of So I Can Believe. This is for the Oz Squared cd I'm doing with my 14 year old son. He is featured on electric rhythm and lead guitars. If I do say so, I think he did pretty good.
The song is at www.virb.com/ohho. It should be the last song in the playlist.
Thanks for listening.

I'm listening to Your Call Has Been Traced, and the voice starts, and I'm sitting here thinking that voice sounds damn familiar. Turns out? I've been playing with TWC codes all night! Awesome!
Your tracks are intimidating the crud out of me, by the by.

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/05 10:45Wow - i was totally starting to get burnt out working on a track tonite - ready to quit and call it a nite - but i decided to go out and get coffee.
when i returned i messed around with an idea we had started on saturday - we used an 8-bit sound library intending to do some kraftwerky stuff but didn't feel it.
So upon returning i whipped off this 1 minute ditty:
I may do another vocal take and add a couple finishing touches, but for now I think it represents a good day's work. It's been a long time since I built a song from scratch using a recording device of any kind, and it feels good!
By the way, the song is an acoustic-driven, slightly Neil Young-ish number with an electric 12-string guitar solo in the middle. If you listen, let me know what you think!

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/05 17:23Songs nos. 2 and 3 (demos) are up..."Chasing Ghosts" and "Always On." The two are (mostly) kind of up-tempo rock songs. In the spirit of making these "Damage/Damage-Control" albums a certain excuse to be more experimental than my usual fare, these are probably about the closest I've come to (and maybe will to) "pop." (well, whatever that word means nowdays). Decided to get those out of the way, along with "Short Days," just because those might end up being most of the simple ones. Some of the others now I have in mind will probably be more experimental, more complicated, at least to record.
Anyway, will probably expand these two a little more (expecially "Always On," it probably needs it), and I'm going to be able to get a bass track put on there too. Don't have any drummers right now available, hopefully the fact I recorded them using more overdrive rather than distortion and I should have a good bass track on them will make them sound ok. However, if anybody who happens to drum (or program, or whatever) likes these songs and wants to give these a crack, please drop me a line. Or if you know anybody who is a drummer, ask them.
Hopefully more stuff on the way soon, and of course any and all feedback (if people can get to it, it's kind of hectic working on one's stuff and trying to pay attention to all this other stuff, damn this whole RPM thing is big) would be appreciated....
This one is called "IMC" still quite in progress, and sorry that the end just cuts right off there... I've not gotten to the point of ending any tracks yet.
This song will rest in the middle of "Side B", as a bit of a pause/break.
