Having an audience that listens is one thing. Having an audience that understands is an entirely different thing. Thanks so much for feeling it.

Power Pop Production Piece - 2008/02/19 15:55My "masterpiece" or the song that required three or four times longer to mix than it did to record. An insistent accoustic 12-string riff plays off a Byrds-y chiming guitar, both smoothed out by a classic organ sound and propelled by a chugging bass line and a drum kit that has a big ambient sound. All this is coated with layers of harmony vocals and various percussion ear candy, and then the whole thing is slathered on a great big hook. It's a Power Pop Dagwood sandwich of a tune.
To me, it sorta sounds like Top of the Pops circa the mid 60s. Or the Southeast in the mid 80's janglepop scene. Check it out and let me know what you think, it's on my RPM profile page or on my web site (link below).

Re:Post your demo's here. - 2008/02/20 16:39I put up a piece I call "Glare" that I have been working on (and off) for years. I dusted it off and voila! A somber string-bass-piano-guitar-fuckedupoboe combo. Also, a short piano and string composition: "Romance Laissez-Faire" on the profile. I'm having problems finishing "Angels of the Lobby." It doesn't want to convert to mp3. Bollocks.

New Gumbo demo here. - 2008/02/20 19:43There's a new song in my profile player, aka "tiny jukebox" click the "tiny person" on the left by the thumbs. You can click the thumbs too, but only once every six hours because they don't like being twiddled.
This new one is called The New Ralgia Blues (offsite link/download) and it is based on experiences during the last week, while I was confined to bed with PAIN!
Thanks to Tangmo for keeping the ball rolling, Kavin's Acoustic Church for the good advice, and Sister Savage for the extra mouths to feed
Does the short solo in the middle work? It's meant to work in a kind of, well, you tell me. It either works or it doesn't.

beautiful from both sides of the headphones (I mean it sounds interesting before I put them on), so a distinctive and yet sensitive mix with a wide tonal range. I like this a lot. Sold.
finishes a bit abruptly. perhaps that was the upload?

Thanks for the insight. My original versions were all too atonal. The ending is cold because it was a quick encoding at 128, not the finished mix.

The Sleepless - 2008/02/21 00:09Ok... so after having a really hard time with this album, I've completed a song. In yet another crazy change-up, I'm now thinking of recording this album purely with vocals ala Medulla. The instruments just are not working for me. I will probably change my direction yet again tomorrow, but for now, the demo "The Sleepless" (formerly "5 A.M") is posted on my profile if you wanna hear it...
edit: oh, and I posted it up on my myspace, too...

Re:The Sleepless - 2008/02/21 04:41I'm not sure if it is a keeper or not, but as a lark, I present in my profile "Voice of Frustration," which I dedicate to everyone involved in this year's challenge.

Relentless - 2008/02/21 08:49My fourth song is up; it might not make the final cut, but I was blocked and frustrated, so I started this stupid thing, and here it is, lucky you:

New Demos Posted (and Thread Name Returned) - 2008/02/21 16:22Yesterday I took the afternoon off (it was slow at work) and made some major progress, finishing up three songs. That makes six done, four to go.
The first one I finished ("Not There") features a cool guitar lick from another old bandmate, the talented Holden Richards. I kinda like the sparse sound on the tune, the bass line, and the jittery guitar chording. But I will also take the blame for the keyboard solo. http://www.brokenpromisekeeper.com/2008_RPM_demos/Not_There.html
In late January of this year, it snowed not once but several times here in Atlanta - a big deal down South. For "Light on the Snow," I got some inspiration from the weather and then more inspiration and help on the lyrics from Athen's resident poet/chef Lamar Thomas. Dr. Bob added some cool organ and synth souds. http://www.brokenpromisekeeper.com/2008_RPM_demos/Light_On_The_Snow.html
Feedback is pure icing on my cake-baking project. Slather some on if you have time.
PS, ILoveJen, I fixed the thread name just for you and your "fuckedupoboe" part

New Demo Posted - 2008/02/21 20:07"Mayday" is my latest. Aside from mixing and a few effects, this one's ready to roll.
BPK, your album is slammin! I don't remember last year's being as rawkin as this one... I like it!

Re:New Demo Posted - 2008/02/21 20:11@ josh: mayday is pretty solid, you're doing a lot with just some drums and EP on here. (if there is some kind of bassline I won't hear it on these speakers)

thanks -- that was my goal this year, to make ten really good, rocking songs, not just ten finished songs

Re:New Demo Posted - 2008/02/22 03:15Ive finally posted something. The curious thing is that I wont be using this, maybe thats why I posted lol
Its right here and it might be good to noise lovers
This is an instrumental version, as I'm struggling with lyrics. Vocals may be added before the final version, or maybe not. Maybe I'll just recite the "Hymn to Pan."
So much to do, so little time remaining.
I wish we had the little  guy. This guy - - doesn't quite cut it.
And since I'm in a mixing mood tonight...also introducing...
It's a rough mix, I need to even out the levels a bit. But you get the gist.
Hope to enjoy.

+1
I tend to use this guy but that probably just confuses people

Thanks!!! I kind of felt like I was cheating, the way the various instruments just fade in and out. It's a technique of last resort when I have no idea of how to arrange a track.
But when my wife walked in and said that "it sounds like the Exorcist in here," I knew that the mission had been accomplished.

New Demo: Lazarus - 2008/02/23 20:13I posted Lazarus, which started out as something really deeply spiritual and surreal, and devolved into a song about a night owl's constant feuding with his alarm clock. (sigh)
(Special thanks Akmed for finding time in his special to record some guest vocals. As everybody knows, Akmed is that morning person that goes around annoying night owls while they're trying to sleep. As you may have guessed, he has tons of health insurance, since this particular hobby isn't a safe one.)

Isilwanyazane - Feedback? - 2008/02/23 21:52Took a break from Aldeles to mix a mouth harp piece I did right at the first of the month. I got it all mixed but now I'm not sure. This is the spirit of insects in two parts, flyers and crawlers.
I guess my question is, is this interesting enough? Should I include it or not? (Might have to if I don't get Kapi done in time).
Opinions requested.
Check out Isilwanyazane on my profile player,
Edit: Flayers don't exist
