Re:new demo up DnB'ish - 2008/02/15 23:00
Thoughts:
decent beat
Snare is a little thin sounding but snappy.
weird electro synth noises / hits. Not sure that those fit particularly well.
That pad thing going on is sort of out of place though. It's not entirely wrong or out of place but I would recommend reworking it a little.
This defintely tends more toward IDM than traditional DnB.
I'm on a laptop so I can't hear whether you actually have any bass going on, I'll just assume you do.
Break came in just when I was waiting for it (beat drops down to the saw bass) but it's over way too quick.
I think it could use a vocal sample somewhere. Like the drum solo.
One thing - I think you need to pair your snare with another hit from the same kit - using the same sample for the accented and unaccented snare hits (not sure what the technical term is here) makes the beat sound a little cheap.
I agree that the mix needs a little more space. The synths need some room to breathe.
Overall needs some work but it's a solid foundation.
Wait, I was reviewing do it. Oh well most of it still applies.
Minds rebel sounds fine to me. This is actually even less DnB sounding to me. The beat isn't really driving it forward the way it needs to. Bass sound is cool though.
I disagree about the ambient synth, there is no problem in my mind with doing dark atmospheric DnB.
My main advice on minds rebel is to throw a really banging beat in there, right now it's sort of puttering along. It's just this uninspiring snare sample playing the same pattern. You need to wind up to a solid beat and have that throw down for about 80% of the track and I would call this a solid DnB showing. right now it sort of meanders along with a decent bassline and samples but the drums just are not doing it for me.
Overall there is a lot going for minds rebel but the drums are not pulling their weight (at least on my laptop speakers)
