Re:Survival Strategies for Emerging Artists - 2008/02/01 02:57
I sent my 2007 RPM CD into the LOC for copyright registration as a compilation and I will do the same this year. However, a few important points:
1.) The chance of someone stealing my stuff (and me finding out about it) is between zero and none.
2.) If someone DID steal it, the chance of me collecting anything that would remotely offset the legal fees is between zero and negative infinity. Wouldn't it be great if someone stole your stuff and had a #1 hit. You could then get a lawyer to take your case on commission and the lawyer would get all the $$$.
3.) Folks that are in a position to make money in music won't steal your song. They might steal your idea or title -- but an idea or a title is not copyright-able!
There it is: Register your stuff for for all the right legal reasons (I am), but don't stress over that kind of stuff. No one is going to steal your stuff and if they did, there is probably no money involved. You should be so lucky if __________ (pick the top rated artist here) should steal your copyrighted tune!
