Welcome, Newfoundland!/Band Map/Kickoff Parties - 2008/01/26 00:12 We are delighted to announce that The Scope, an alternative newsweekly in St. John's, Newfoundland, has signed on as a regional RPM sponsor for the Newfoundland/Labrador area! This means that they'll be spreading the word and signing people up, encouraging them throughout the month of February and throwing their own listening party at the end of March to celebrate! We're very excited about this not only because we can use the help, because it's the kind of local connection that we love to see created -- we'd love to see regional supporters around the world.

RPM is first about making music and challenging yourself, but it's also about community, and the more chances that people in this RPM community have to meet each other face-to-face, the better! Regional hubs like The Scope in St. John's in Canada, and The Wire here at RPM HQ in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in the U.S., help to give musicians more opportunities to gather and meet to discuss their music. There are many ways that you can foster your own RPM hub or group in your part of the world, but a really simple way is to get people together for a kick-off party next Thursday, January 31, the last few hours before RPM 2008 begins. We encourage anyone within range to join us upstairs at The Press Room at 77 Daniel Street in Portsmouth, NH from 7-9 pm on Jan. 31 to help us celebrate the kick-off of this year's RPM, and spend one last night of freedom! Wherever you are, though, you can plan your own -- all you have to do really is designate a local watering hole or cafe as a gathering place, then put it up on the discussion board or e-mail some RPMers in your area through the website and let people know! The kickoff party idea is very low-key, just a chance to get together and meet and swap ideas, so no need to plan anything elaborate. I'm looking at you, Hobart! And you Londoners! And NYC, and San Francisco, and everywhere there's a cluster of RPMers. Let us know what you're planning, so we can help let people know.

The band map is back! Unfortunately, we had to reset it by erasing the map points from 2007, so if you're a returning participant you'll have to enter your coordinates again.

To put yourself on the map, you just need a latitude and longitude, which is easier than it sounds.

If you're in the U.S, go to geocoder.us and enter your address; for other places around the world, go to www.satsig.net/maps/lat-long-finder.htm and use the map tool there to zoom in on your location. Either of these will generate a set of precise latitude and longitude coordinates. We want the coordinates that are in basic numerical format, such as 42.823472 and -70.655226.

Now go to your profile page by clicking "Your Details." Go to "Edit>Update Your Profile>Location," enter in your latitude and longitude and hit the "Update" button.

Note: do NOT use any characters other than numbers, decimal points, and minus signs... no degree marks or minute marks or anything, just basic decimals please (as above) since the program is finicky and other characters can cause problems with display.

Now you're on the map! It may take a minute for you to appear, and make sure you refresh the map page. If you enter your coordinates and the map loads and your pin doesn't appear, look in Kazakhstan or the North Sea, as that is where the missing pins usually go.

And keep spreading the word! If everyone e-mails ten other musicians, or puts up ten posters, or posts about RPM to 10 discussion boards, it will help a lot!

For those of you who are 2007 participants who haven't yet signed up for this year, this will be one of the last e-mails you'll receive as we switch the mailing list over to 2008 -- sign up now so you don't miss any news!
