are you famous? - 2007/01/30 05:22 So, is there anyone, like, "famous" taking part in the challenge.

I'd be interested to see what some of my favorite bands (Wilco, jimmy eat world, REM, Tom Waits) could put together in a month.

Safe to say that whatever REM put forth would suck balls. *sigh* how I long for 1988.

john.

Re:are you famous? - 2007/01/30 14:22 I'm nearly famous! I have a button that says so!

Seriously, though, I haven't seen any names that are famous, yet. At least, not names that I know. Probably really famous people haven't got time to do this, because of working on their commercial albums. But I do think it would be cool to see what a famous band or musician would come up with in a single month. A short month, at that!

Re:are you famous? - 2007/01/30 16:50 Spirtualized recorded 'Amazing Grace' in 18 days...dunno how long they took to mix it.

Most bands with a record deal would LOVE to be given this sort of thing but no record company would ever allow it.

If you know any famous people email them a link!

But they might make some people feel a bit inferior.....or maybe not eh?

Wonder if anyone from here will go on to be famous? Eh?

You could always become a famous bank robber or something, I suppose...

Re:are you famous? - 2007/01/30 18:14 I would tend to think that if you really have sonething going on, this would not be the sort of thing you would do. Most likely, you would be gigging, writing, recording, etc. etc. and if you somehow had a month of downtime, you wouldn't spend it "working" for free.

Interestingly, the mass email that was sent out this morning asks this question another way: What do you hope to get out of this? For someone who's got a record deal, a career going, mouths to feed via music, that's a question that needs a pretty compelling answer.

I think if I had things going that well -- especially in this day and age when the music scene seems to be in a "bust" phase -- I would be spending this amount of effort trying to book some shows and working towards more career advancement.

Then again, who's to say that's not what I'm doing from my standpoint now? I think a batch of new songs, for a guy like me, joe schmoe songwriter, is a really good benefit. That's my answer. I hope at least some of these songs will be compelling to add to my repertoire permanently and be included on my next big-deal CD, rerecorded much spiffier than I can do myslef, the way I'm going to work here.

I was going to take issue with most of your post, but you rallied at the final paragraph

I'm not famous by any stretch, but I do make a portion of my income from music, and would like to increase that ratio. Yes, BIG music industry is in a "bust" phase perhaps, I think you're right... but the flip side of that is that I don't think it's ever looked so rosy for the independent artist in terms of avenues for distribution & promotion.

I don't think we're working on music this month for nothing... On the contrary, I'm optimistic that the work I do over February can at least provide the seed for more lucrative/marketable material in the following months.

Re:are you famous? - 2007/01/30 19:49 You never know who might be lurking behind a nick. I chat frequently with someone well-known in another field who also makes music...quite well. He gets on the internet and he's just one of the guys, though. I think if I were famous, I'd enjoy that.

As far as people 'famous for music'being involved, who's to say? Wouldn't they, as Matt said, also benefit from a batch of new songs? Might they not enjoy giving up the fancy facilities and cranking them out neo-oldschool? Don't the most professionaly produced and polished tunes start life as scribblings on paper, a few chords, and a melody...whether the writer/player is famous or not?

Anyway...that's a life I really can't imagine, so it's hard to imagine how any particular one might want to spend February.

Re:are you famous? - 2007/01/31 01:56 there's a couple electronic musicians here that are relatively known. they're not household names of course, but it's cool they're doing this. (i won't name names, so as not to embarrass them.)

I agree it's time REM traded in the drum machine for Bill.

I've drank beers with Jim Adkins... does that make me famous? (i wish his song writing ability rubbed off on me a little bit)

Re:are you famous? - 2007/01/31 06:10 Well, Jimmy Page wrote "Stairway to Heaven" when he was 28. I could play it when I was 14.

I'd say that makes me a living fucking legend.

ditto on REM & Bill. I miss the days when I couldn't understand a word Michael was saying. That was great music.

You must not have seen the sign over the door when you came in.... "NO STAIRWAY!"

Oh, and I once saw Emo Phillips standing on a train Platform in Dublin as my train was pulling away.... does that make me famous?

That doesn't even make Emo Phillips famous.

Hey man, ridiculously jealous on that one...

I once got to a venue 6 hours before showtime and stopped Rick Burch as he was going back into the club with his lunch to get him to sign my copy of Clarity...closest I've gotten to partying with the Jimmys. Those guys rule.

...also met Conor Oberst that night, but had no clue he was in some band called Bright Eyes at the time. Oh, how naive I was...

Ya. I went to Ariz. State (JEW's from Mesa). A friend of mine was having a graduation BBQ. I rolled up wearing my "Your Band Sucks" t-shirt and noticed a dude who looked just like Jim. I asked my friend who was who. "this is bob, mary, jim..."

I whisper... jim adkins?

yup.

Turns out my friend's kid and jim's kid are playfriends.
