Time to mix - 2007/01/25 05:58 Hi all, just wondering from anyone who did this last year, when is the best time to mix?

I mean do you mix each song as you go along or wait until the end to mix it all.

I only ask as I am used to only recording 1 track from recording to mixing before going on to another.
Any thoughts, tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

1 week to go.....

Re:Time to mix - 2007/01/25 07:10 Last year I mixed each song as I went, then did some touch ups at the end. Normally I work in a mix of all different schedules and methods, like mixing partly done tracks, adding more, mixing complete different takes, etc etc, but for this job, I think I'd go crazy mixing 10-12 tracks all at once.

As each track will be done quickly, you won't be overly familiar yourself with what you've done - if you come back to it a few weeks later, you'll probably end up spending lots of time just working what is what and how you planned to do it originally. Best thing would be to mix as you go, then at the end listen to them and fix anything that drastically stands out.

I'd love to remix the one I did last year, as the mastering was quite shoddy, but I couldn't for the very reason listed above.

Re:Time to mix - 2007/01/25 18:21 I'll be mixing as I go along, mainly because I don't have enough hard drive space left to keep multiple gigabytes of sound files around.

One little tip: keep a mixed version of your first song around, so you can use it as a reference for setting the levels of all your other songs. That will save you from that annoying thing where you get one song that's twice as loud as all the others, or one that gets buried.

Re:Time to mix - 2007/01/25 19:47 Last year I left the mixing until the last 3-5 days. The Idea I had was to spend first couple of weeks just getting enough material to fill the alloted 10 songs / 35 min. requirement. I figured at least I'd get the songs even if they weren't mixed perfect.....and they weren't perfect. But considering the last minute scramble I had, It was good that I left the mixing until the end. This year I am going with the same idea but will try to leave a little more time at end to mix. Also to leave 1 or 2 days where I do not listen to any of my stuff before trying to mix. to get away from it. Kind of like Proofreading your own writing . I need some time away to forget what I know it sounds like.

I do like the idea of keepng a mixed version of Track 1 available as a reference so the album is well balanced level-wise.

Re:Time to mix - 2007/01/27 19:46 Personally, I prefer to do it as I go. I lose enthusiasm for a song if I don't get it finished within that first rush of inspiration.
