Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/22 14:01 Hey all

Just a random thought; I wondered if the folks in the RPM corporate office (closet?) have considered producing a compilation CD of this event. Of course, with the number of participants approaching 300, it would more resemble a box set.

But I'm sure said participants would each purchase one. 300 units aint bad if you press 500. And then if, say, half of the entries are solos and the other half bands with an average of 4 members, then you've got... hmmm... carry the six.... 750 units sold, just to RPMers, not counting the public.

These sales might help support the RPM machine and its overhead costs. I bet there'd be plenty of folks willing to donate mastering, artwork, etc. And I bet some cd pressing facility somewhere might cut a deal for duplication in trade for some free advertising.

Any thoughts?

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/22 16:36 Or just make it an electronic box set that sells individual tracks. That way you don't need absolutely everything everyone did and it would be a little more price sensitive for regular consumers if they wanted. After a little thought I find there are two problems with the electronic and the box set idea.

The Legalities of who owns what music and what the artists and publishing companies they produce their music under would be compenstaed for the use of their songs. People like you and me might be like: "go ahead and sell it, it's all for the cause" others could be a little more protective.

The other problem is that if you have 200 bands with 35 minutes worth of music that's 7000 minutes of music. Each CDR I own holds 80 minutes worth of music. So that would mean each box set would be an 88 disc set according to my estimation. That's a little unrealistic. Or is it? I don't know.

The less money involved in the deal the better. Though I do like the sentiment that we could all get actual copies of what everyone has done and it could help out the Wire and everyone running the challenge. I'm not exactly sure how to do that without spoiling a really good thing.

It would be great if everyone could agree to just having all of the music available to download for free. Then at lease we could burn our own 88 copies from home!

Or around 8 discs in MP3 format.

Personally, I plan to sell my album myself- But I'd be happy to kick in one or three songs for "the cause" as it were.

What I would like to see is an online store where I could buy any of the albums produced in the challenge- perhaps linked directly from the jukebox. I also think that fits nicely into the whole MP3/DRM/free/paid argument: Stream for free, pay for discs or a DRM-Free download.

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/22 17:14 Acually, I was thinking 1 cut per artist. Guess I forgot to mention that.

So now we're talking one 3 minute song from 200 bands , 600 minutes, approx. 7 discs. Whew! That's still a bunch! Then again, 200+ bands signed up last year, and 165 were able to follow through. Who knows what the final tally will be?

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/22 17:24 Funny, people are willing to support the "cause". Bruce, do you find subtle humor in that?

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/23 11:35 Ha ha. Maybe its time for the reunion tour, all across Central Ave. My mom might come...

Back on topic, 1 mp3 from each artist would chop down the number of physical cds, but who buys "hard" mp3s? Maybe a downloadable collection is the answer. Good call, Rev.

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/23 16:22 A downloadable collection would probably be the best way to do it. I say give it away for free though.

It could be a simple matter of asking everyone when they turned their CDs in what song they would like if any to be on a free online compilation.

Lately in my experience playing out I have found most people don't pay for music anymore anyways. Though it's probably just my music they won't pay for

-thanks- Now that I think about it, though...

Anybody see the last Barenaked Ladies album? I don't know if anyone has actually tried releasing a CD filled with MP3s, but I think it might be a good experiment. Especially when most CD players these days will play MP3 discs.

I mean really- who wouldn't pay $15 or even $20-25 for a CD with 300 songs on it? Hell, I'd be willing to pay $30- song for song, it's 1/10 the cost of iTunes.

I used to download stuff and then go buy the CD of whatever i liked, but I flat out quit buying major label music when Napster was shut down.

I still buy just as many CDs, but only when I can hand my money directly to the person playing on them. Think globally, BUY LOCALLY!

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/24 13:58 That's one heck of a justification. I guess I have my own version of that as well.

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/27 21:47 Not everybody writes 3-minute songs ....

either way as it stands now I'd be perfectly happy sharing anything I produce

unless of course people are willing to pay for it, in which case I'd gladly accept the $$$

Re:Compilation Disc? - 2007/01/27 22:11 I know that the Leaders are exploring making a new version of the RPM Jukebox which could incorporate Free access to band's Albums and I imagine - pay to download.

The big thing is that they (we, I worked on the last version, which is static) need to make the new version fed by a database... as this is a grass roots effort across the board.

Phew! Wow... one beer and I'm all over the place with my stream of consciousness.. Sorry!
