Official Whining and Crying Thread - 2008/04/01 18:56
This is thread is the place to whine about the Jukebox 08. NO WHERE ELSE SHOULD ONE WHINE AND CRY ABOUT THE 08 JUKEBOX.
This way it can be COMPLETELY ignored by Mosfet and company who have done such a wonderful job they don't need to listen to us fringe whack jobs of operating system rebellion. This is the place to make noise about things you really don't expect these poor overworked (sometimes smashed, falling from balconies) guys to fix. And I do mean that.
Linux in 32-bit Jukebox with Firefox 2.0.0.13 Flash 9.0.115.0 with NoScript used to block the version check All features work everything is good. Logins don't work this morning. BUT - random crashes of Firefox. No Jukebox 08 no crashes.
Linux in 64-bit Jukebox Firefox 2.0.0.13 Flash 9.0.115.0 NoScript blocking version check "Loading" comes up gets to the part where it normally says "Loading library 0 of 1" and stops. I never see "Loading Library" but the progress stops right there and it's end of story. No Jukebox 08 at home where I do MOST of my listening. And there was much gnashing of teeth.
Linux in 64-bit with 32-bit Sandbox using chroot-ed linux32 (setarch) Unknown as of yet. Still rounding up the cedar planks to build my sandbox. Though I normally simply refuse to use anything not fully supported in Linux or 64-bit (you ALL are coming with me kicking or screaming because digital music over a 64-bit bus is TWICE as fast using saturation arithmetic and SIMD -- it might hurt now but you'll thank me later).
If I can help in anyway, please let me know. I leak Linux bits out my ears.

I hereby take this opportunity to whine and cry because I can't listen to this spunky and nifty new jukebox on my lousy dialup connection. And my 2007 genre still says "experimental." I'm about as experimental as corn flakes.
Other than that, I remain in awe of the geniuses who put it together so nicely. It's truly an incredible feat!

I see Kai's dialup woes and raise him the lack of sound on my internet machine. Even if I had sufficient bandwidth to stream music on this groovy looking and splendidly funtional piece of software genius, I would be unable to hear what I was streaming.
I also put the love of my life on a plane Sunday and am unlikely to see her again before August or September, but not even Mosfet and crew can engineer a solution to that--despite the fact that they rock on all 9 cylinders when it comes to all matters Jukebox (with the exception of Mick's issues which I sympathize with, but neither understand nor feel rise to the depth of my own pain.)

that's it. I'm officially donating all the proceeds from the iTune sales of my album to Kai and Tangmo, so they can join the 21st century with broadband. And Mick can give Tangmo his old busted headphones so he can hear.
though, I warn you, my Mom said she's watching her budget, so I may not have a sale like I did last year.

Agreed. Watching that oh so special person leave knowing you're not going to see them even for a week sucks bad enough. It's been a while since I we were long distancing and I, for one, wouldn't want to go back to that.
But, the few days we managed to get together here and there were always awesome.
I feel for you, Tang. It's been recent enough I can remember what that's like.
Whine, whine, about long distance relationships and long trips. <-- to stay on topic here.

Re:Official Whining and Crying Thread - 2008/04/02 00:15
Hey everyone,
I'm writing this message not as a representative of the RPM crew, but on my own behalf, from my perspective as both a RPM participant and organizer. Let me say first off, that it warms my heart - truly - to be a part of a project that has become so important to so many people, and to see all the enthusiasm and energy that so many artists are bringing to the table. Your affirmations AND your criticisms have been invaluable every step along the way - we LOVE feedback, and always, always take it into consideration.
At the same time, I have a hard time understanding the impulse to "whine and cry" on the RPM discussion boards about what us hard-working, well-intentioned RPM volunteers are NOT doing for you. Especially when it comes to the Jukebox. We've made no bones about it being a work in progress. We released knowing there would be errors to fix, knowing there's always room for improvement. We've given a you a way to contact us about bugs and glitches and told you we're want to hear from you. We've made it clear we're interested in your suggestions for future versions.
I realize the discussion board is a public space and anyone on it is free to say whatever they wish. I wouldn't want it any other way. But why, when we've shown our interest in your contributions and given you the means to share them, do you still find it necessary to take us to task in a forum that only instigates and escalates negative dialog, and where we have the least opportunity to help address your issues.
We're not a corporation, we're not taking your money, we haven't sold you a defective product. We're a few good people trying to do a lot of good work. We respect all of your efforts and I, at least, have the expectation that folks respect ours.
Chris

Re:Official Whining and Crying Thread - 2008/04/02 02:15
Chris, I'll speak for myself (and I am probably speaking for Kai too), but RELAX...I'm just jumping on the Whine and Cry thing to have some fun. I DO appreciate the great work you guys are doing. I KNOW it's a volunteer effort and a work in progress. The basis of humor in this situation is that we can't really assist in giving you feedback either glowing or with suggestions...because we know full well that this (like many of the coolest parts of the internet) is not available to us. We don't hate you for that...we are used to that...and humble in the extreme. We can't really access it in any meanignful way to listen, but danged if we can't imagine how great that must be.
If you want me to get serious about whining and crying, I'd be asking for nearly impossible stuff from ya'll--and I'm not going to do it. But it's pointless for me (and Kai) to even open the 'serious' threads about the jukebox except out of some voyeuristic curiosity or need to feel connected to the greater RPM...and possibly to laugh at silly broad-banders whining about not enough chocolate on their sundae.
Sincere love and eternal thanks to you guys. No shit. I mean it. There's not an insincere bone in my body.

Chris
Its human nature to complain about something, even if its near perfect, we find flaws and that's just what we do. I don't beleive this was written with the spirit of disrespect, thus the ground rules to not let this spill out onto other posts. But as was mentioned, this is a post for all to express whatever, as you have expressed your yourself on this post. In my personal opinion, the reason a post like this exist is not to "run down" the work that has been done. Quite the opposite in fact. Why would we care so much and spend so much time here if this were not important to us. If we did not appreciate the space, the organizational effort, or the "product", we'd be doing something else. As many of us, I have spent many hours singing the praise of the RPM challenge and its crew. But even I have some things I would like to change, for one, I would like to update my songs with the latest and greatest versions. I realize that probably isn't realistic, but it doesn't stop me from wanting it. I want to wake tomorrow 100 pounds lighter. Not coming and there is no sense in complaining about it, but I will at some point.
Really I think we are all on the same page, at least 92% on the same page. This post represents significantly less than the other 8%. A 92 is still an "A" in my book.

Yeah, Chris, this is all in fun. We are all totally thrilled about the new Jukebox. It is a masterpiece that you all should be, and I am sure you are, totally proud of.
The Whine and Cry thread is for fun and for me, a way to inform others, of what I find out as I keep working with it. As I find solutions I'll post them here and in time, everything will be worked out.
Please don't take this in any way as real complaint forum. We're just whining and crying because, at least in my situation, I've totally put myself here and I completely blame ME! There is a solution to MY problem and when I find it, I will share it.
This is by no means meant to be taken serious at all. Except for getting Tangmo some real bandwidth so he'll participate next year. Maybe you can have Mosfet or Ken rewrite the whole Internet to magically creating 1.5Mbits out of 44Kbs. That'd be cool!
Tangmo siad it best :
Sincere love and eternal thanks to you guys.

Yep, Tangmo spoke very well for me, too. It's all a little fun for me, since I get so little of it in my real life. (O.o) I've only been able to look at the Jukebox, so far, and not play anything, but that's no fault of RPM or the coding work. It's just my slow-ass dialup crap internet.
Tang, how sad we are in the same boat in two different ways, the prehistoric internet crap and the long-distance relationship! I'm beginning to think we must be related. Maybe I should refer to you as Cousin Tang, now.

Set 'em up and knock 'em down!
Oh my, I thought that it was pretty clear from Mick's intro that this was a joke thread!
When you have Mick, Kai, Raleigh, Tang, BPK, et al. on a board... all people who pretty much do the heavy lifting when it comes to keeping it positive on the boards... I think it's fairly obvious that this is a lighthearted thread. These are not complainers, here... they're the ones who have consistently talked people down from the anger ledge!
It's clear everyone needs a little merriment, right?
If not, let the following line clarify:

Your mom buys your albums?! Man...
(initiates new whine, to stay on topic) My mom doesn't want mine, even for free! Neither do my siblings or other family members. That's real good for the ol' self-esteem, which wasn't too hot, to begin with! (end whine)
But no matter. I have fresh hot brownies in the kitchen right now, so in a few minutes, I will be chocolate high and won't remember any of the whines that were in my head, tonight. I wish everybody here a gooey chocolatey happy for the rest of the week!

Yeah, that's the least you could do.
I currently spend all of my free time on this site (I admittedly don't have much free time, but that does suggest it's at a premium) and am sooo looking forward to next February that it's actually *wince* quite sad. Chris, you guys make my year! Enormous thanks to you.

Update for Linux:
Linux in 32-bit Leaving the Player docked seems to pretty much eliminate the Firefox crashes. You don't get to see the cool art, but it's stable. I still can't log in.
Linux in 64-bit using nspluginwrapper No go. Can't seem to load the library, whatever that is.
Linux in 64-bit inside s chroot-ed 32-bit sandbox Success. 1) Find a sandbox program such sys-apps/as sandbox (Gentoo user here) 2) Install 3) Download 32-bit firefox binary. It comes with all the libraries it needs. 4) Build your chroot jail or get real familiar with sandbox and use it 5) Install firefox binary in the jail 6) Use chroot and sandbox to run the 32-bit Firefox Cool thing about this is, no need for nspluginwrapper and everything works. And any other non-64-bit program can be put in your jail and ran.
Linux in 64-bit - even easier solution. Use ia32 libs install the following packages (from your distro) - ia32libs - ia32libs-gtk - lib32* Install the 32-bit Firefox binary and set it's link path to the ia32 libs. Viola. Done.
Linux 64-bit using VMware In Gentoo emerge -pe vmware-workstation - this will install TONS of stuff and take a few hours to compile everything but in the end you can now create a virtual 32-bit machine. Load a generic version of your favorite 32-bit distro into it and run Firefox. This is the sure-fire way but it EATS memory and disk space (that could be a new song)-- so unless you got it, don't flaunt it.
On a lot these I still have to use NoScript to block the Flash version check
---> To stay on topic: I'm whining that I find there's a hole in my motorcycle riding boots that let's water in when cars splash me on rainy days. Soaked left foot.

I'm whining because Stu said "Can I" instead of "May I" and that reminded me of my control freak 3rd grade teacher.
And I want Eschertron's "non-virtual time-compression package" too -- but I want it in Linux 'cause people always wondered what kind of anatomy removing accident I had when I say "Unix". I want to whine about that, too!

Clearly Gumbo CAN whine, seeing that he already has. As to whether he MAY whine--it is pointless to ask for permission for a deed already accomplished.
The above is Tangmo's impression of Mick's Third Grade teacher's impression of William F. Buckley, Jr.
Bless you, Stu. That has to be rattling. I hope your sh*t gets pulled together again quickly.
