post songs as you go feature for website? - 2008/01/19 23:38 hey Board Mods,

So... a last minute request... maybe too last minute?!!? Is there a chance of having a songs page added where each user can post songs as we record them and have users post replys with encouragement , and suggestions. it's sort of like, each user gets a forum thread for each song...arranged in such a way where at the begining of each thread there is a place for lyrics, any comments on the song / recording process the writer wishes to share, and a link to the audio (website / mp3 hosting site.) it's a great way to really help each other out with inspiration, plus when you are checking out others material it helps keep the creative juices flowing.

Re:post songs as you go feature for website? - 2008/01/20 00:47 Sounds like a good idea. I'll be using soundclick as the listening medium for my works in progress. Of course I am not sure how much listening I will be able to do of other folks stuff (lol!).

Well artwhore,

You have touched on a difficult subject here. In my experience, getting fellow artists to actually listen to, much less comment on their compatriot's work is difficult, if not impossible. Most just don't really want to do it. I have spent a lot of time on Garageband's site reviewing other people's work. I have a straight 11 for a score on the quality of my feedback (that's as high as it goes). I have gotten huge thank you notes for the level of detail I provide. When I get feedback, I get snippets, unfinished thoughts, etc. I stopped doing Garageband since it wasn't worth me writing so much for so little in return. So what's the deal?

1. Most are lazy and don't want to put the time in. At the end of the day, a room full of artists are mostly a room full of people all saying "Look at me!" It's hard to look at someone else's stuff when you are busy trying to get everyone to look at you.
2. Some don't want to say bad things, and aren't sure how to nicely offer a critique, so instead they say nothing.
3. Perhaps, sometimes the musical styles are so different, they genuienly don't know if it's good or bad, so again, nothing is said.
4. Lastly, sometimes when offering feedback, the person offering it gets flamed by the person who wrote the songs. Don't ask for feedback if you can't take it, they think and stop bothering.

Thoughts everyone?

Gary

Re:post songs as you go feature for website? - 2008/01/21 00:33 Well... isn't that what the "Demo Engine" was about last year? (Does anybody know if that will be brought back this year?)

I know that Wen & I listened to pretty near all the folks who posted stuff on the Demo Engine - and we sent messages to a ton of them about their stuff.

Then again, I guess we could be outside the norm... it wouldn't be the first time...

kirk & wendy, aka acl, aka another cultural landslide

Re:post songs as you go feature for website? - 2008/01/21 01:08 Yes, we had some of that ability to post-as-you-go last year with the Sample Engine, and then folks could discuss the material on the discussion board if they chose. We're looking at the best solution for this year, so stay tuned!

I'm thinking 'ahead of the curve' instead of 'outside...'

but seriously: after my post to the sample engine, kirk and wendy, you were the only ones to offer any feedback whatsoever. Make of it what you will, but I agree it would be nice to get any kind of feedback. sigh.

Re:post songs as you go feature for website? - 2008/01/21 05:34 Gary. I'm coming up on 8 years at Acid Planet and I think you are pretty well correct.

I listened to more RPMers music last year before the challenge started and after than during. Reasons:

a) I have a dialup connection and streaming Mp3's is not a click'n'play option.
b) I actively avoid listening to music when I'm trying to write. Little seedlings of songs struggling to break the soil in my mind can all too easily get washed away by the tiniest rivulet of somebody else's music.
c) I just plain old didn't have time. What were there...850 bands last year? And I had to make an album of 10 brand new songs?

I did the best I could...which admittedly wasn't much. And I got some good comments as well, but in the end WE are not the audience we seek.

I have the blessing of a few online friends at a posting site where I've been a while, so my post-as-you-go was seperate from here. That was my 'look at meeeee' spot.

None of that makes the concept the OP raised not worth doing, and it would be great for those with bandwidth, time, and interest.

Yes, you are absolutely right Tangmo. I totally agree with that, lest anyone think I meant otherwise.

Regards,

Gary

PS- Nothing wrong with saying "look at meeeee", just make sure you look at me before you do that please...

That's easy. Just put a mic in front of a speaker

Re:post songs as you go feature for website? - 2008/01/21 17:06 There are plenty of places to post your process, like VIRB, hosting your own website, etc... And I'm sure it would be interesting to have something on the RPM site for us to use, but yeah, I wouldn't expect a ton of feedback.

While I will agree that most people are lazy about things that don't directly apply to them, I will say that in THIS case, the fact that everyone is pretty much working as hard as they can on recording and album in the shortest month of the year that they don't really have the time for really thoughtful, constructive feedback.

March is a much better time to get feedback on your work from fellow RPMers, because everyone is so excited to hear each other's work.

And they can finally breathe.
