10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/02/24 05:37 It's OR 35 minutes, right?

20 minutes is kosher?

Technically, I guess one of them is not a "song" either, as TECHNICALLY a song has lyrics....9 songs, 1 "piece" or "arrangement" or whatever.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 01:38 Good question! And while I don't have any answers, I too have been seeking them. I certainly hope that instrumental music counts as a 'song' for the purposes of counting ten of them; otherwise I have failed to meet the challenge. It's my understanding that RPM is looking for 10 songs OR 35 minutes of material (so an hour of your dog snoring would qualify, I guess) so meeting either criterion would suffice. With 11 tracks on the album, I am about 1.5 minutes shy of the 35 minute mark. So those pesky instrumentals better count for something!!

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 01:46 Sure instrumentals count. There were a bunch of jazz groups last year and lots of ambient, electronic, noise etc. And by the way nice song titles!

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 01:52 I'd think instrumentals count, too, and the rules do say "10 songs OR 35 minutes of music." Lucky me, I came in at 10 songs AND 41.2 minutes! I was afraid I'd be shy of one or the other requirement. I should remember I ramble a lot, and there was no need to be worried about any of it.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 04:22 I always assumed it meant that...35 minutes if you WEREN'T doing 'songs' per se. Did I just say 'per se'? I think it you had two 18 minute orchestral pieces, for example. you're good. Either way, I'm covered. 14 songs...44 minutes...one is an instrumental reprise of one of them. All were recorded in February. 11 were written in February.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 16:41 Well I hope instrumentals count since only one of my songs even has vocals and that's just "Oh tie yeah" background anyway. So if instrumentals don't count, I produced nothing at all!

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 17:26 of course instrumentals are songs! music is music...words don't make it a song.

and by the way our records was 10 songs in 24 minutes, so don't worry, you are not the only one rocking it on the short.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 17:30 Ill be the first or second person to say It must count. A definition of a song can only be given by its' creator and the big word in the challenge is "OR"

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/01 18:03 Oh I'm totally sure it counts. I just found it funny to think that after 28 days of some HARD work and LONG nights it wouldn't. Just I would have been too tired to care, today I'd take on the world.

9 songs for 43 minutes

My mileage was very similar. I popped the CD back into the computer after the burn and it clocked in at 10 songs, 23:16.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/17 00:50 I'm harping on the actual definition of song. Heh. All music is music; TECHNICALLY, not all musical compositions are songs. Songs do have some form of singing or vocals. Instrumentals can be called that, pieces, tracks, etc, but they technically aren't songs...weird, eh? See, that music minor taught me some shit.

song /sɔŋ, sɒŋ/ [sawng, song]
–noun
1. a short metrical composition intended or adapted for singing, esp. one in rhymed stanzas; a lyric; a ballad.
2. a musical piece adapted for singing or simulating a piece to be sung: Mendelssohn's “Songs without Words.”
3. poetical composition; poetry.
4. the art or act of singing; vocal music.
5. something that is sung.
6. an elaborate vocal signal produced by an animal, as the distinctive sounds produced by certain birds, frogs, etc., in a courtship or territorial display.

You should read your definitions thoroughly before using them as evidence to back the claim that all instrumentals are not technically songs.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/17 02:14 yeah i'd say this is the time when music is in the ear of the beholder...or that seemed to be the decree of 10 songs or 35 min of original material...a chance to create music on your terms...Thank You RPM!!! I had to avoid songs I had which were well over 20 min, not because I didn't think it wasn't music....but hey, how long can we all listen?...

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/17 03:45 I'm sure do hope instrumentals count - all of my tunes were instrumentals :-o

It sounded like the rules made it OK to have 10 songs OR 35 minutes, so 1 35-minute track or 10 2-minute tracks should be OK.

I don't follow. All those definitions still imply the use of vocals or singing, though not "lyrics." Did I say lyrics? If I misspoke at any time, it just goes to show we all don't always say exactly what we mean.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/03/17 23:26 P.s. I probably should've said instrumentals generally aren't songs.

Re:10 Songs=20 Minutes - 2007/04/02 04:23 Well... My two medleys come in at just about 35 minutes ( 34:34 ). Two medleys with 18 "songs" total. The songs don't come separate. 9 songs and an instrumental in the first one and 8 songs in the other. The first medley is the one in the streams and on the jukebox as of now. Can't miss it really. It's only one of two that are over 10 minutes.
