m-audio fast track problems - 2007/01/28 12:51 I am new to this whole recording thing. I have a mac and just got a m-audio fasttrack interface to hook a guitar and mic into GarageBand. I have tried ever possible combination of dials and buttons (there aren't many) and the volume remains low on recordings. I am new to the mac and all that is involved, so this compounds my futile attempts at recording. Does anyone have a suggestion short of a hammer? I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

Re:m-audio fast track problems - 2007/01/28 12:55 If you're really in a fix and you need to raise the volume of previously recorded audio with garageband, use the AUDynamics plugin to add some gain

However, with the fasttrack you should be able to get acceptable volume levels from a mic, that's what it's for.

what kind of mic is it? I heard somewhere that you'll get low volumes if you don't phantom power a mic that needs it, but I've never tried that.

Re:m-audio fast track problems - 2007/01/28 15:44 I'm guessing here, but are you using standard passive pickups on the guitar? You'll probably need to use active pickups or a guitar preamp before going into the audio interface because the impedance of pickups is too high. An effects unit between the guitar and the interface should sort it out if that is the problem. This will raise the signal going into the interface to line level.

Condenser mics have an incredibly high impedance, so they usually have a preamp as near to the capsule as possible (to reduce noise). This is what the phantom power is used for. That and to keep the diaphragm separated from the other capacitance surface.

Phantom power uses +48V most often, and this is applied to both lines of the balanced pair. In this way you can apply phantom power to most dynamic mics without a problem (useful if you are using both condensers and dynamics without individual selectors on each input). Hence the name. Don't plug in or remove a plug when phantom power is applied, and don't use certain types of mics with phantom power (like ribbon mics).

Re:m-audio fast track problems - 2007/01/28 16:03 um... this may be completely stupid of me to presume, however, you did say you were new to mac. have you tried going into your System Profiler, opening the Sound options and adjusting the volume for your INPUT device? the default setting is pretty low.

just wondering.

Re:m-audio fast track problems - 2007/01/28 17:26 Thanks for the clarification on the mics aeolian

The fast track has an in specifically for DIing guitars, so I don't think that's the problem

Ntheday I didn't even think about that....My interface overrides the system volumes but the fasttrack may not -
A check is definately a good idea.

That's pretty handy. Sorry, ignore my bad guess, then

Re:m-audio fast track problems - 2007/01/29 15:48 You should definitely head over to M-Audio's site and check their knowledge base. http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faqs . There are a few helpful troubleshooting articles.

I don't mean to be discouraging, but I gave up on my FastTrack USB after numerous driver headaches and eventual apparent hardware failure. But I was using a PC, and if I learned anything from TV commercials its that MACs > PCs.

TV wouldn't lie to me, right?

Re:m-audio fast track problems - 2007/02/01 22:15 I had a similar issue with the older M-Audio Quattro. Two things worked for me: I stuck a cheap 9-volt powered Realistic DJ mixer (4 channels; about $40) with balanced RCA outputs straight to the soundcard input, or the headphone jack out of a small practice amp to the input of the USB connection. It can provide a substantial boost so try it at a VERY low volume.
