Ever dropped your guitar... - 2008/06/03 09:46 Those that play guitar probably have at least one horror story involving guitar strap coming off at the worst possible time. I have broken the neck on a vintage ax (1968 Gibson Melody Maker) in just such a way. After years of tricks and work arounds, there's a strap that actually does the job.

I don't EVER put this kind of stuff out there unless I have used the product, and I have used the product. It is simply the best strap I have ever own. The strap has a mechanism built into the strap to lock around the bolt. No need for heavy strap locks or changing out original guitar hardware. The same strap work for electrics and acoustics, even the hard to fit bolts. I have used it on my Strat copy and my Curbow bass. The guy that hipped me to this uses one on his Les Paul...and you know how heavy those are.

The inventor is the same guy who produced the original Matchless guitar amps. Not in stores, but available online.

Re:Ever dropped your guitar... - 2008/06/03 10:08 That's pretty dang clever! Does it work for those cheesy 80's "spin your guitar around yourself and get really tangled up in your cable and accidentally unplug yourself in the middle of your solo" moves?

Now if he would only offer the ends alone, I make all my own straps custom to each guitar. My Les Paul is solid Ash, and weighs a lot (something like 13 pounds), and it really requires an extra wide strap to keep my arm from going to sleep while playing it. Currently, it has a 4" wide saddle leather monster strap, with a slight relief so it doesn't dig into my neck as badly, and I would love to have a set of locks like this on that strap!

The five string bass is "very metal" and has a strap made of three sections of chain, welded at strategic points along the way, and you do not see a lot of other straps like this for sale (and for good reason; it will rip out hair and leave a very intersting pattern on your skin for days).

search on musicians friend or wherever. The Schaller's are the best, but there's lots of brands. That way you can use them on any strap.
Or if on a budget you can make your own DIY strap lock by drilling a hole in a couple of thick picks. Then remove the strap peg on the guitar, put the drilled pick on the screw, then the strap peg, with the strap on it, then put it all back on the guitar. The only drawback of that is that you can't take the strap off, but it will never fall off either

Re:Ever dropped your guitar... - 2008/06/04 00:03 Ive got Schallers on my Nightwing, they hold well enough and are easy to use.

The chain strap on the bass is screwed rigth in, so it doesn't come off without tools, and its a bit of a pain in the ass to get into the case that way (has to have the chain laid in just right so it all fits). I tried the plastic rotary style locks, they work well enough but didn't survive the chain in the case for transport (not a common problem I realize). I thought about Schallers here as well, just haven't gotten around to picking up a set.

The Ash Paul is a very different problem: A previous owner moved the strap stud to the back of the guitar, after the screw broke (allegedly from the weight of it). It improved the balance quite a bit over other pauls I have worn and played, but the tail of the Schaller pokes me while playing. Not a serious issue, but a bit agravating. That, and the strap is really too thick for many of the strap lock systems out there. I could cut the end off and mount a thinner end, but I figured if I can get the slide system Lyndell posted about, it wouldn't dig into me as much.

Might have to end up buying one and pitching the strap body. I sent them an inquiry last night, will post the reply here when I get it.

For the record, some of my applications are pretty far out of the normal, so I probably should have an asterisk beside my post on such things, wouldn't you think? He He!
