i found that the most valuable item in my equipment aresnal wasn't a mic or guitar or effects processor. it was this little sony dictation recorder i have at work for meetings. like one of those micro-casette things but it's digital and even a little smaller. i carried it with me to capture some lyrical ideas, in the car when listening to the radio to make notes of cool stuff in songs, did some really quick song/riff sketches just on my acoustic at home (no mics to set up!). I even recorded a trashy, telephone like vocal track on it to use on my album!
more conveneint than a notepad, 4 track, or whatever for the songwriting process!
