I got that book a couple of years ago, never got around to reading it.
Nautically, though, I'm halfway through Book 18 (out of 20) of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series (whence the "Master and Commander" movie starring Russell Crowe).
HIGHLY recommended.

I can't wait to see where you placed my track with all these fine musicians. Looks to be a wonderfully eclectic mix.

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/26 20:54I just want to thank JW for putting together these podcasts as a way to help those of us participating in the challenge to get our music out there, and to hear some of the great work our co-participants are up to!

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/26 21:49Oh hey, here's a suggestion: I like to keep track of which artist/song I'm listening to along the way, so I can make note of the ones I am particularly interested in. But I get lost along the way, especially with some of the more experimental styles (which I'm really into), in cases where it can be difficult to know for sure where one track has ended and another has begun.
Could you update the track listing on your blog page so it notes the starting time of each of the songs in the podcast?
Thanks!

Just started it, but I am already humbled by what is Bryan Litchfield. Wishing I had one sliver of that talent. Wow, Bryan, amazing.

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/26 22:18Hey, don't slight yourself. That didj stuff is way cool! Did you actually play it exactly as it appears or is there some deconstruction and looping going on? It's amazing how well this simple, ancient instrument works with electronic music. (I'd love to play the didjeridoo but I have never been able to learn how to do circular breathing.)
There's a lot of talent here... I'm up to the "Don't Tase Me Bro" track and so far I'm very impressed with everyone!
*EDIT*
Holy crap... that "6 2 Fill Blues" is great. I'm glad I wasn't drinking milk.

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/26 22:22That's a combination of didj. jaw harp, and pennywhistle. Most of the second half is jaw harp with a short delay echo and the didj underneath with chorus and very short delay reverb. I played the jaw harp against the echo with the timing of every other pulse to get that throbbing thumping sound it goes into every so often. The effects were on the input side so that's largely live with a little reverb added post record.
It was my fun with effects day.
And thanks!

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/26 22:27Cool, I thought I heard a jaw harp in there but then I thought maybe it was a special didj technique.

Good idea... I'll add the start times to the tracklist for #4 and post here again when I do. Tonight, most likely.

I 2nd that emoticon!
And great songs everybody. I'm especially tripping on "Isilwanyazane", and a couple more I'm having trouble identifying (I'll have to wait for the index before I give more details) ...
BTW thanks again Josh for including me in the mix; where else can somebody like me mingle with *real* musicians ... ha!
PS: I'll be cleaning up the bass fills and excess cymbal crashes on the final mixes. (I've been told I have a tendency to toss in an excess amount, and I agree, but they sound so damn good at 2 a.m. on the headphones!)

Bryan, you've got the voice. It takes a lot to carry a song with just a voice and an acoustic guitar.
I like the empty feeling that song has.
Excellent work.
I am still listening, so I will check in later with more about the others here.
Cheers,
Gary

Hey Gumbo,
I was reading your post as your song came on. Very nice intro to it, great song as well. I like the chord progressions and the tone of the acoustic.
Cheers,
Gary

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/27 01:30I'm still at work, so I can't wait to hear this (after I'm done with the tracks I need to work on tonight - argh)...
... but I'm noticing one glaring omission...
Mr. Wentz - where is a track from YOU???
Hmmm? No JW tracks for two podcasts!
Beyond all the good work you've done here for others (for which we all lovingly thank you for!), I always look forward to these podcasts to hear more of your latest stuff - away from the demos on your page!
Inquiring minds want to know.
kirk (& wendy), aka acl
P.S. Not demanding, mind you. Just inquiring.
P.P.S. Yes, as much as it'll anger MsKitty, we're thinking of starting a Joshua Wentz Fan Club.
Uh oh. I'm gonna pay for that one later... damn that cat...

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/27 01:35Hey ACL, your stuff is great... after hearing the track on the podcast, I went to VIRB and downloaded your entire album from last year. I love the found speech on "Doomsday."
As for "Fred and Ethel," another great track. I have to ask, are you familiar with the French band Magma?

Re:RPMcast 4 is LIVE!!! - 2008/02/27 01:39Despite how often a shoot my mouth off around here, I'm modest at heart... I don't like to put myself into every single thing I produce. After all, most of the Sidedown audience has to hear me talk about my products/projects every day... I'm sure it gets old.
So, I put myself into the podcasts if I feel like I need a little "filler" to pad them out... but I got so many great submissions the last few times that I've had no need for filler.
And you did hear me in Podcast 3... in the Very Us Artists sampler... and in clique
