Please judge the sanity of this - 2007/02/15 04:14I'm thinking about trying to put together my whole entry in a day. Obviously it won't be very polished, but I think it could be a really cool idea. I'm thinking that it would be a lot easier to do ten songs than 35 minutes if I was doing it in a day because the songs would probably all be pretty short, so maybe I could have 35 one-minute songs.... Thoughts?

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2007/02/23 01:22I think this Saturday may be the day. I've only got one class, but I can just start the 24 hours after that. Even if this doesn't work out for the challenge I'm definitely keeping whatever I do get recorded so when I'm old and rich but the record company has me contracted for another album I can just give them this stuff.

You're giving yourself way too much time. Where's the challenge?
I'm going to try to do my entire album in five seconds.

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/01/14 18:50Sanity? What sanity? I can't judge what I don't have! I am wayyyy to finicky when it comes to my songs to do them all in one day. I will sometimes re-record vocals several times before I'm happy with it. Sometimes I'll edit several takes together into one decent track. Sometimes I'll get so frustrated with myself that I'll do something else for awhile until I calm down. I think it will take me a bit longer than a day to do this. Good luck, and remember to breathe right on your vocals or you'll make yourself hoarse. ER

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/01/22 06:09You are fine, sanity-wise. We were originally going to try your idea in my songwriting group, but we decided it wasn't going to work out and just wouldn't be worth it due to scheduling issues. So instead, just a couple of us are going to do the whole 28-day thing. (No 29th day for me because I've been hosting a leap day party since 1988, and that's not about to change now.)
Anyway, this "songwriting group" I belong to is part of the Immersion Composition Society. We meet every month and show off between 6 and 20 songs which were conceived, written, recorded, and mixed within a 24-hour period. It may seem insane, especially the first time or two, but you get used to it.
I live in the Twin Cities and am a member of Bullet Lodge. PM me if you have any interest in this stuff.
Good luck! I'd love to hear you crank out 10 songs in a day. Sometimes it's surprisingly good! It's never very "polished", though, so that's why I'm doing the full month.
Cheers!

i'm also in a Lux Divon so i get to do 2 albums in a month that means boson needs to get it knocked out quick so i can hang and right with the sexy lux
29 days? naaa
i got 29 hours
gonna try anyway.
not sure what to do about the mixing and mastering though. i may have to get a friend to do final mix and master cause my ears will prolly be shot.

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/01/24 21:48If I'm not mistaken, someone last year turned in an album that was 70 30-second tracks. Someone from RPM HQ back me up on this?
Though, it was probably during all 28 days...

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/01/24 21:54Hm. Giving me ideas. I think I could enjoy doing an all field recordings/sound collage album.

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/01/25 04:1470-30sec tracks? Now that would be amusing, and jolly good fun. Use a little fading and walla! A mix disc!

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/01/31 09:26Go for it! It really depends on what style of music you are creating. If you are trying to do recordings with a full band or something, its utter madness!

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/02/04 23:55You could make an interesting concept by experimenting with the state of yourself during this. Obviously you'll be needing to have a full day with no work or somesuch to interrupt. Why not start the first track right as you wake up, groggy and badly needing the morning's black cup? Then, once the caffeine intake has propelled you through a happy track or two, take some herbal teas to mellow out a small amount. Then, when you feel like it, take up the heavy drinking! Really the album will have a diabolical feel like this, once you reach the later tracks. To end it perhaps partake of strong sedatives of your own choosing and fall asleep on your guitar. It will be much like a story in which the hero ends up passed out in a pile, with their brain trying very hard to be a big train in the morning!
Please do not blame me if you damage anything in your internal area though. I hear that damage can happen like this sometimes.

oh im new by the way...glad to meet everyone. I guess it's ok to introduce myself here? if not..tooo bad . hehe This is an awersome idea,..RPM... It's like practice too. And I bet people who participated last year would have some interesting thoughts about how they felt their progression went. What they learned...ect...
All the things we have learned as musicians will be utilized...most interesting. Just too bad that it seems impossible to be able to listen to all the people who have participated....

The idea reminds me strikingly of The Residents. Go for it! The crazier the better!

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/02/08 06:49Tim Nelson wrote and recorded his album beginning at the first minute of Feb 1 - and turned it in 12 hrs later at the WIRE HQ after a marathon recording and packaging session. He has no time this month otherwise..
He may actually play on Feb 29th and record that and submit a 2nd album on March 1.
WOO!

It was actually 15 hours later... (and 'wrote' is moot, as it was improvised, although I actually like the finished result better than last year's effort.)

The idea of one massive 35 minute song sounds pretty cool, as well as massivly insane (see Monster Magnet's "25...tab" for my inspiration on such a wild idea).
35 one minute songs? Insane. Insanly cool!
Field sound recordings? Also insanly cool!
Man, there is going to be some fun stuff this year!
Rock on.

...now I feel like recording a 35 min experience is imparative.... ...one for the cause!

Re:Please judge the sanity of this - 2008/02/10 01:39Well the legend is that Captain Beefheart wrote the entirety of his legendary album Trout Mask Replica (28 songs, 78 minutes) in 9 hours. But the Magic Band took several months to learn all of the insanely complex arrangements before the album was actually recorded.
Still... give it a shot! (Actually, I've been considering, if I get my project done early enough, trying to pull off a second album this month, with a completely different style and approach.)
