Sellaband - 2008/01/31 01:51 http://features.us.reuters.com/techlife/news/N1O262574.html

This article talks about a site www.sellaband.com that allows people to fund the recording of your album. You post your album on the site and people can then 'buy' parts of it. When you hit $50,000 you get to pick a studio and record your album. Anyone currently on this site?

Re:Sellaband - 2008/01/31 02:34 So what rights do those people retain to your music after they've funded the album? I'm sure they're not doing that for nothing....

Ok, after doing my homework:

SellaBand will own the Album Master for 12 months after completion of the recording of the CD. After one year the full rights to the Album Master will revert to you. You’ll grant SellaBand a non-exclusive license for a further 12 months.

Hmm. What do you guys think? Good deal for an artist trying to get out there? Or a great way to get f-ed by SellaBand? They also choose your producer for you.

Re:Sellaband - 2008/01/31 04:09 I don't like it. I would never give up the rights to my music, especially for the first year. That's when your music should be getting the most exposure and thus $$.

I suppose that you could do your album and then hold it back for a year and release it when the contract runs out though.....kind of dishonest.

Re:Sellaband - 2008/01/31 05:27 Great way to get effed. Seriously.

It stands to reason that if you can get enough people interested in you to shell out 50,000 DOLLARS, then you should probably go your own way, and not let anyone own any of your work for a year.

Oh, and where is all that money sitting while you're waiting to get to $50,000? Oh, their interest-gaining pockets? Yup.

Well. that sums it up. Clearly, Raleigh doesn't have any "interest-bearing" pockets. Of course Raleigh I can never listen to your music quite the same way again.

Cheers,

Gary

Re:Sellaband - 2008/01/31 07:29 Y'know.. that does sum it up. The stuff coming out of the spare rooms of scantly clad (or completely unclad) musicians is better than anything on the Top 40 wall of Virgin.
