MP3 conversion - 2008/05/09 06:16 For a format that is the standard, you'd figure there is more free plugins and software to convert to that format. I found some things, but most want me to buy it. I have enough random peices of software that I own to buy a software just to convert WAV to MP3. What are you guys/gals using?

Re:MP3 conversion - 2008/05/09 09:42 MP3 is not a free format. Every encoder must pay license fees to a German company called Fraunhofer. Hence why they all cost money. Fraunhofer were clever though, they don't charge a license for decoding which has enabled the format to become the "standard".

However, there is LAME which gets away with it because it doesn't do the encoding itself, it needs another program for that. So my suggestion is to download LAME and use Audacity to encode through it.

This is why we really need (as musicians we have the power) to move away from MP3 to other free formats if possible.

Re:MP3 conversion - 2008/05/09 10:34 I use WavePad 3.05. The free version. Yes, it's really free. No trial, nothing.

It can play/convert/edit lots of formats. You can convert/save to MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, etc.

I spent about a month looking for something to make FLAC files with a while back and didn't realize WavePad could do it all along.

Re:MP3 conversion - 2008/05/09 20:48 iTunes (for Mac or Windows) converts to a variety of formats including MP3

And it's free ..

I think it is also useful to have a conversion software that acts as a library so you have a separate library for all the different mixes of your work.

I use iTunes also, for the reasons above. I think my DAW software will also encode to mp3 too, but I've never even bothered to look.

Re:MP3 conversion - 2008/05/11 01:26 At this point I don't know why you'd bother using anything OTHER than iTunes unless you're running Linux. Although I know there are some severe Apple haters out there who complain for whatever reason about the Windows version of iTunes. They're probably just resentful that the REST of their software isn't so totally awesome.

Re:MP3 conversion - 2008/05/11 19:20 LAME - runs on everything and is pretty much the defacto encoder now days. It has options to handle even challenging issues.

Re:MP3 conversion - 2008/05/12 00:07 I'm an Apple fan just as much as the next guy, I love my MacBook and I love iTunes. But... The MP3 encoder in iTunes is terrible - it leaves horrible artefacts in at the top end of the spectrum. LAME is definitely the best MP3 encoder out there.

On the other hand, I wish MP3 would just die a death. Its 15 year old technology and there are numerous formats out there that compress to the same degree but sound a lot better.
