Bassist Needed - 2008/02/27 18:23 I know it's late, but maybe there's a bass guitarist out there that has finished and has an hour or so to do a bass part for Wanyama? Would pretty much have to be done today or tonight. It's in my profile player but I can provide one without the off beat drums that is much easier to play too.

Anybody out there got a spare hour? just need something simple and you even have 4 measure in the middle to strut your stuff however you choose to.

I can beg!

Re:Bassist Needed - 2008/02/27 19:40 I can give it a go. I'll have to do it tomorrow night (I'm mastering my own stuff tonight), assuming that's not too last minute.

What do you do? - 2008/02/29 02:55 When you ask for a bass track colab and you get three that are totally kick ass?

Tough choice.

Alan, Matt, and Rob laid down the lo-freq and I can't decide because each one makes Wanyama sound different. And all are awesome. What do you do? Edit, of course.

Matt gets the second half, Rob the first, and Alan the break. But then Rob's break is sweet, so maybe Matt the first half, Alan the second and Rob gets the break. Wait, Matt's break is totally smokin', so maybe Rob the first half, Alan the second, and Matt gets the break.

Okay, problem not solved. But, you gotta admit, not a bad problem to have.

Re:What do you do? - 2008/02/29 04:28 Close, Raymond.

It goes like this
Rob->Matt->[break] Alan->Rob->Matt->Alan

Processed with a smidge on my plate reverb to a half-wave diode processor to a phaser

And it smokes!

Thanks to Alan Hall (F7), Matt Parker (Honeycomb), and Rob Stuart (Broken Promise Keeper). As usual, when you combine RPMers it only gets better. This is a sweet, sweet track and Wanyama needed it. This was one best left up to a real bass.

Demo is updated on my profile. Wanyama v2

Re:What do you do? - 2008/02/29 04:57 While enjoying the first alcoholic beverage that I've allowed myself in weeks (is that info really necessary to the thread?) I have just given a listen to Wanyama (v2). What a hoot! I'm ROFB - rolling on the floor barking! - from how much fun this is. This whole RPM community thing just kicks!

Re:What do you do? - 2008/02/29 05:14 the only thing I can say that's not super positive is what all bass players say -- "I'm not loud enough"

very cool. I've had more fun doing long-distance collaborations this year than I ever imagined. let's all keep it going the next 11 months!

Then again, look what happens when a bass player gets to be as loud as he wants... have you ever heard Chris Squire's solo album, Fish Out of Water?

P.S. I'm a bass player too... and when I used to mix 4-track recordings I used to do with some guys in college they always complained that the bass was way too loud in the mix. And of course they were right. But if they'd had their way I'd have been complaining I was too quiet. Now that I play all of the instruments myself the bass is more balanced, but it's still prominent in the mix because damn it, it's important!

Re:What do you do? - 2008/02/29 07:07 Amen, Brother!!

I have a habit of turning my bass down cause I don't want it to be too loud in the mix, but I really like it loud!!! Well, you know. Louder than the loud guitar player on the other side of the drums, anyway.

I did have a couple of prominent bass tracks.

Long live Chris Squire.

After all, I am wearing a Yes T in my picture.

Re:What do you do? - 2008/02/29 09:54 New demo sounds great. Glad to have helped out.

I would have got involved in more collabs, but as this is my first RPM I didn't dare take on more than I could handle. Next year I'll know how to handle my time better.

Re:Bassist Needed - 2008/02/29 15:48 Right now, I'm thinking if I do this next year, and especially if I'm in the same situation as I've been in this year (basically no one around my geographic area able to help out), I'm going to look into some heavy colab work. On the other hand, I might do it even if I do have people around my area to help. Just to do something different. Kind of what I've been using this challenge for anyway (although part of that is due to limitations of what I can do/have available). I'm all about the trying new things music-wise. Otherwise, you're just boring...lol. Now, if I can just get some extra money lying around somewhere...get a bass myself...and some drums. Mmmm....instruments....
