Meh, I think Audacity is clunky with an ugly interface. It came with my USB turntable and the manual gave the impression that the turntable ONLY worked with Audacity, but I was quite pleased when I discovered I could use any software that supports USB audio input, even GarageBand!
My favorite waveform editing/mastering software is Sound Studio (formerly by Felt Tip, now Freeverse). Of course, it's Mac-only.
I have another partition on my MacBook running Ubuntu. For a while I was trying to get it set up with the Ubuntu Studio package, but, well... Leopard came out right around that time so I stopped playing around with Linux!
