Re:cheap/free mastering software for mac g4?? - 2008/02/18 20:47 audacity does it

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

it's free and does everything. It helps if you understand the lingo for some of the features/effects, but if it can help me it can help you

Re:cheap/free mastering software for mac g4?? - 2008/02/18 21:19 I've never used Audacity for that but it functions as a multitrack recorder as well as sound Editor/manipulator, so it should at the very least be workable

can you export your tracks (ie channels) individually? or is it as a stereo mix?

Re:cheap/free mastering software for mac g4?? - 2008/02/18 21:27 Depends on the job you're after, Zumatar. Audacity probably won't help you equalize the volume of the tracks and I don't think it lets you even see a spectrum analyzer or an equalizer. If you just want to stick them back-to-back in order and do some cross-fading I think it can do that with a plug-in.

Re:cheap/free mastering software for mac g4?? - 2008/02/18 22:21 ...thanks guys.

what I want to do is take my "mastered" cd (which should be in album order)
...and look at the stereo tracks on an analyzer and then final EQ and comp/limit

...basically master the stereo cd a bit more.

last year I went with my DAW mastered cd cause I didn't have a computer with enough memory to consider this...

Re:cheap/free mastering software for mac g4?? - 2008/02/19 00:24 guess you have to cut a CD on the Tadcam then put it in your Mac - you should be able to open up the song files as stereo aiff files in something like audacity & tweak away.

As far as I know the current Audacity does can load VST/audiounit plugins so there should be a bunch of mastering style plugs for free on the net. I've never found spectrum displays much use but that's me.

My favourite of all time is Apple's graphic eq AU plug. Does that say something about me?

Re:cheap/free mastering software for mac g4?? - 2008/02/19 01:05 Hi.

I don't like Audacity, I'd rather use wavosaur, which has a GUI that is very similar to Sound Forge and has a really cool implementation for VST plugins. Wavosaur is free, look for it at KVR.

Once you have an audio editor I recommend the classic effects suite by kjaerhus: you will find there a good compressor, a decent graphic EQ and a cool master limiter.

You would also like to use an spectrum analyzer: try Voxengo SPAN and there is a good paragraphic EQ named Nyquist that would be useful.

You can find all of these plugins ant www.kvraudio.com

Regards.

Re:cheap/free mastering software for mac g4?? - 2008/02/19 01:38 I'm not a huge Audacity fan yet but it IS getting better. A Mac editor was required anyway.

In my mind - an editor should be a basic shell that's fast, stable & has sensible selection & marker capabilities ALL of them with well-thought out keyboard shortcuts - yeah, like Sound Designer 10 years ago. There's still nothing quite as good out there these days...

Somewhat temporary solutions... - 2008/02/19 03:11 Okay - gotta get back to music here, but if you're still on a G4, here's a couple of suggestions - some free, and some temporarily free:

Wave Editor is a very good editor, and normally costs $250 - but they offer a two-week fully functional trial as a demo - which should more than cover the end stage of RPM. I've used Peak for years (and hated it) and I've found that Wave Editor works much better, and has much better processing & dithering options.

So, for two weeks, you can check it out for free. Not a bad deal. (The downside is you'll want to buy it.)

Here's an important disclaimer - since you didn't list your processor speed, be sure to check out the specifications page to make sure you can use it on your machine.

• Since you're still on a PPC Mac, you can't go wrong downloading the Fish Fillets package of compressors from digitalfishphones - they're free, and they kick serious ass.

The downside is they don't work with Intel Macs. (a serious loss)

• EQ is a bit more problematic - I long ago abandoned free EQ plugs, but I know there are a few decent ones out there... but you'll need to search them out. Not as good as what you can buy, but it should be at least serviceable.

Hope this helps - if you want a few more places to look, let me know - and when I'm a little less under the gun, I'll find you a couple of other recommendations.

kirk (& wendy), aka the slightly overwhelmed another cultural landslide
