Hey, I'm running on SM58 (for everything) directly to a cheap little Zoom MRS4 Porta Studio...
I produce everything in Audacity....it's not bad, if you don't have it. Search for it on Google and you can download it for free.

Hi Mapletones, not sure, but I bet you can get a free update to PT 7.3... I was able too from 6.9 but my good plugs don't work with Tiger... so I'm still stuck with 6.4 for a while...DOH!
I love these threads!! So fun reading about everyones stuff, and how they plan on recording to 4 tracks and cell phones... its AWESOME!
Here's the Color recording/instrument gear rundown... I've got a spare Mac G4 tower (pretty slow at 400 mhz!!) but running OS 9 & PT 5.1, it works great with an old Digi 001 box... awesome actually! I have a Presonus Digimax thing that has 8 respectable mic preamps, good A-D and an ADAT optical output that I can use with the 001... it works and sounds great.
Color is Matt on Saxes... tenor, saprano, and bari. Jamie on drums... (he'll be using his giant old Slingerland 26" kick drum!!) and I play a beat up old rhodes mk I thru a Leslie cab model 45, that I power with a great new tube amp that Mark Steves made for me based on an early 60's Fender Bassman schematic... NICE! oh, and I can't forget my Memory Man... hehe
For mics it's pretty simple... the only mic in the list that costs more than $200 is Matts RE-20 that he uses for live gigs, and still sounds great after many (and i mean many!!) gigs. It's the same mic he used back in the Tongue & Groove days 15 years ago!! hehe...
Saxes - 1 AT 2020 Kick - 1 EV RE-20 Snare - 1 Sure 57 Stereo OH's - 2 AT 2021's Leslie Top - 2 Shure BG 4.1 Leslie Bottom - 1 M-Audio Nova Room - 2 Panasonic mini condensers that Ray Brunelle made
For mixing I have an identical G4 tower, but it's been suped up to 1.4 Ghz and I run PT 6.4 with a digi 002... can't believe that I'm still using this box!! man I need a g5
Best of luck to all!!
Rock On!

I write in Myriad Software's Meoldy Assistant 4.something
I arrange in Cakewalk MusicMaker 2
And I mix in Acid Pro 4, thanks to the Free Sound Project.
I thought about upgrading, but figured the $$$ would be better spent on Shiraz.

Re:Gear - 2008/02/18 02:53
Hi All: Anbody else have pictures to share of their recording space? We moved in a new to us house (110 years old) in Nov. I interviewed a bunch of contractors about building a studio in the attic, basement, and in a bunker under the yet to be constructed garage. We found a great guy out of Columbus. He is a musician and general contractor, and has built numerous studios from 0 budget to mega budget. I dream of having a studio in a hundred year old+ building with red brick walls, wood floors, 20' ceilings, and lots of sq footage, but to get that we would have to find a dedicated building (got no $ for that ). Plus I would not like commuting to my recording space. So we decided for the bang for the buck on the basement. It is a 12' x12' room within the basement, with central air/heat, recessed lighting, 18 plugs, acoustic ceiling, concrete floor, cinderblock on 2 walls and drywall on the other 2. It has a tad of natural reverb, which is what I wanted. It was going to be 12' x30', but I realized I didn't need so much room. Anyway, it is all done and I am starting to put some pictures up, and have been recording in it for about a month or so. All in all we are very happy with it. I hear nothing coming in from the washer/dryer/furnace/hot water heater/dogs on the wood floors above, and Judy hears almost nothing when upstairs in the kitchen. Here are some photos. Walter

here is Gwen Davis- one of my special education students. She was here yesterday and recorded a cd. She is a true savant- rain man type. I am going to sell her cds to cover her habit-buying used cds, dvds, vhs tapes on the net, burning cds and the covers cases for them. Her mother can't afford it and our wallet is getting a bit thin keeping her in stuff ;gu;
Gwens session -a couple of songs from yesterdays session with me backing her on the 1 man band http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=806114
