clique: a musical experiment - 2008/02/10 21:17 Due to a technological musical breakdown, I (John LaSala) have cancelled my own RPM album, changed my profile name, and started a new project...with only 19 days left!

And now I could use your help! Here's the project description (largely copied from my blog.) If you'd like to contribute a track to it, just respond to this post!

clique

Here’s the idea and how you can be a part of it. In fact, clique depends on your participation!

I created a skeletal piece of music. It loosely establishes a tempo, tonal center, and hints at some melodies. Let's call this Track A

I then handed Track A off to another musician and asked him to create a track to go along with it. He did: Track B

So far, nothing unusual. But here’s where it gets interesting.

I'll next pass only Track A off to someone else to create a Track C and then hear how that sounds against Track B. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. But that's is what experimental music is all about!

But no matter how that first experiment goes, I’ll then pass Tracks A, B, and C (etc.) on to other people until I have a veritable alphabet of clique tracks. Just think of how wild and interesting this could get!

In the end, I will piece together an RPM album created entirely out of this material. What exactly the album will be like in the end will depend completely upon what I get and how the experiment goes, though I’m guessing it will end up as some sort of collection of different mixes of the material, each track of which could feasibly be quite a bit different from the one before.

And in the end, this won’t be my RPM album, it’ll be our album. And we will be clique!

Best of all, what it takes to get involved is really pretty minimal. You can create a track of music in any style, instrumentation, density, or duration. Want to work up a whole orchestral arrangement? Awesome. Just want to do some finger snapping? Fantastic! Wanna just sing along? Go bananas!

Have questions? Ask. And let me know if you’re interested, so we can get this thing under way!

I'm hoping to get this officially under way within the next 24 hours or so, so the more folks I get on board now, the better I'll be able to know how to steer this ship. So like I said...tell a friend!

Re:clique: a musical experiment - 2008/02/10 22:36 A question: Do you just want us to create 1 track (i.e. a guitar track or a synth track) or can we create multiple tracks and mix them down to one track that we then send you?

Re:clique: a musical experiment - 2008/02/10 22:47 For the record, I record under the name "Some Guy". Why I go as Franchise here when it would have been much easier to call myself Some Guy, I don't know, I guess I'm just dumb. lol

Re:clique: a musical experiment - 2008/02/10 23:14 Oh goodie: a question!

An answer: You can basically send me whatever you want as long as it goes (in your mind, at least) with the track I send you. it can be:

· one single line of an instrument (or voice!)
· several tracks all mixed together, submitted as one entity (heck, you could theoretically send me a complete-sounding song if you wanted to!)
· several unmixed tracks

And on top of that, you can send me a completely dry recording, a recording with the effects on it just how you like it, or perhaps both versions!

It's also possible that, unless you specify otherwise, I'll further manipulate the tracks you send me by adding extra effects, muting, panning, etc. The only thing I won't do is chop them up and rearange the tracks relative to the other tracks. To me, that would break down the integrity of the experiment. But in general, due to the very short time we have left, I expect any manipulation will be gentle.

So, are you in Jeffrey?

Yeah I'm in. I'll be participating as Jeff Archer though as this will be a solo contribution (My RPM album is being recorded as half of "Spooky Garcia").

Re:clique: a musical experiment - 2008/02/10 23:44 Yup yup sounds good
Doubt I'll be doing much vocals as the ones I'm doing for my own album are more than enough to inflict on everybody, but I'm more than happy to do some 'experimentation'!

I know its rather early but have you any plans to continue this as a semi-regular thing after february?

Re:clique: a musical experiment - 2008/02/10 23:53 Jeff, Gary, Colin: you're all in! And Ali (bellamysprotege), you're already in. This is shaping up nicely indeed...

Yes, it is a bit early to say if this'll happen again next Februray, but I sure hope so. It'll all depend on how well this one turns out, I think.

At some point tomorrow I'll send out an e-mail to everyone participating to explain the process in more detail. Chances are I'll just upload some files and send out links. But not everyone will get something righ away. Some people will have to wait until other tracks come back. We don't want all the tracks being written to the same base track. It needs to get mixed up a bit in order for the magic to happen.

Re:clique: a musical experiment - 2008/02/12 18:39 I'd love to do this. But as I look at the clock I wonder if I'll have time. So is it possible to receive a track, give it shot, and see what happens with no real commitment. Or are you slave driving here?

Maybe drums, maybe didj, maybe flute..maybe not at all? What say you?
