Wanted: Rockabilly guitar solo - 2008/02/05 01:45 I have a song idea that's in the rockabilly vein, but can't play lead in that style to save my life. I had asked a friend who's very, very good at this to help out back in December, but now it appears he's not going to be able to follow through (damn musicians!).

So, anybody out there good at this style and interested in providing some Brian Setzer-type licks to my song? I know everyone's first worried about their own Challenge but thought I'd at least ask before I butcher it by putting down my own solos...

Re:Wanted: Rockabilly guitar solo - 2008/02/05 03:48 I bet if you get the tune all ready minus the guitar solo, and post the track somewhere you'll get a hundred to pick from... heck I'll do one for ya! I'm no Setzer either... but I can play some...

lay it on us!

I've seen Chris play, he is being humble. Very humble.

Re:Wanted: Rockabilly guitar solo - 2008/02/05 15:29 Cool!

coupla things you'll need to think about to make it all work... 1st... put a marker at the beginning of your tune, or make sure to start your export from the very top of the time line...

2nd...

You'll want everyone to be sure that they export the guitar track they make as a separate file, and that it starts at exactly the same time as your file does... even if the solo doesn't start till the end, and there is nothing but silence for the 1st few minutes... this way when you import the solo track into your daw and make it start at the top it will sync right up...

make sense?

the other this you might wanna do is find a way for folks to ftp the track to you... rather than emailing mp3s... then they could send wavs or otherwise uncompressed files... yay!

let me know if thats makin sense

hey... aww shucks, thanks Gary!!

Re:Wanted: Rockabilly guitar solo - 2008/02/05 15:43 I've done a few of these long-distance collaborations before, so that does make sense. I'll post an MP3 of a rough mix that starts with a count off. Anybody interested should import that MP3 into their recording program, add their track, then export their take alone as a CD-quality WAV file. That can then be emailed or FTP'd back to me and I'll be able to drop back into my program and mix it down.

I will try to get it done enough to post tonight. Thanks Chris!

Re:Wanted: Rockabilly guitar solo - 2008/02/05 23:28 Let me know. I'm willing to throw down a solo, though Setzer is out of my league too.

Re:Wanted: Rockabilly guitar solo - 2008/02/06 05:10 OK, here it is -- definitely a rough demo but hopefully good enough for folks to lay down some (not sure of a suitable rockabilly adjective) geetar. The vocals are for shite, the 12-string accoustic was just plugged in direct, and the drum mix is poor. But I am happy with the bass! I've never tried to play in that walking style before and probably spent more time tonight on that than the rest combined.

So, it's in the key of E (I'm pretty sure) and almost all the guitar chords are 7ths (at least I think that's what they are) except for the intro part which repeats after the first chorus. I have no idea what those particular chords are (I call pretty much any chord I don't know "jazz chords"), but that's where it definitely needs some lead, and then anywhere else it feels right.

I said Brian Setzer style earlier because he's the only rockabilly guitarist I know, so don't let that restrict anybody. Have at it -- I can't wait to hear what the talented RPM folks can add!

Received: Rockabilly guitar solo - 2008/02/09 22:47 Thanks many times to the talented Will Deuel for laying down some licks for my song. The first time I listened to the thing with his stuff included, I broke out in a huge smile -- this was just what it needed.

You can check out the final mix on my web site, link below (I am having upload problems with the player on the profile page, keeps timing out). I completely re-did the song's vocals and the accoustic 12-string was re-done by simultaneously recording it on two computers, one from a live mic and the other direct. Sounds pretty good, I think, but it's Will's lead that pushes it over the top for me.
