Wow. It immediately sounded bigger, fatter, crisper, sparklier, wider, louder, and tastier. Good lord, what have I been missing? Imagine what this will do to a better mix, with more defined instrument space and EQ?

So my goal for RPM'09 (assuming there is one) will be to focus more on the mix and mastering. First year my goal was just to complete the Challenge, and last year was to write better songs. Songs will still be the most important part next February, but I want to also have the best mix and most-polished results. I think Ozone will make that happen. Or will once I read the rather daunting user manual...

Don't be afraid to experiment and royally jack up some mixes. You will learn a lot by making mistakes. Just save an alternate copy to play with.

I love how the plugin helps blend the sound, I've read a lot of posts online disdaining the use by "amateurs" of the software and saying it's no replacement for "professional" engineering. Still it's affordable and does seem to have a place...

That because when 'amateurs' do their own mastering the 'professionals' don't get paid. Imagine that. Personally, I'm hard put to buy the software, much less to pay someone to master my songs. Shoestring budgets really suck!

Here the investment needed to get that extra 2-5% difference.

Speakers - 10,000.00
Clean Power Amps - 800.00 - 1500.00
Analog console - 2,000.00
Analog EQ / Compression - 2,500.00 - 5,000.00
Mastering software - 1500.00
Mastering computer - 4000.00
Professional CD burner - 1000.00 - 2500.00
Cabling - ?????
Room Treatment (20' x 20') 40,000.00 ( cut rate )

I do think a professional, who has done it for a while and has the expensive equipment, can do a better job overall. But the only real valid question in my mind is, "How good is good enough?" If you are looking to rival that million dollar studio quality, than a $200 peice of software is not going to give you that. But the difference is not going to be night and day, it will be a matter of degrees. I'm more than OK with gains I have w /o paying for the pro.
