Website without oversight - 2008/06/25 04:52 Finally, I have created a website for promoting my music. Unfortunately, I am still working out the hosting details. I want multi-format streaming and eCommerce which apparently is requiring multiple providers. I have some specific wants based on my personal bad experiences.

But what I'm looking for is content ideas. What kind of stuff do people want to see on a band website? I have visited a few and there are some universal elements. Biography, Discography, track samples (optional), and promotional items like T-shirts (maybe keychains). Most have photos. Not looking forward to that, not at all. But...that's normal stuff.

I have no show dates to post because there is no band. There's just a me. But as I look at what I have listed, and what's been created, it doesn't seem like much.

Re:Website without oversight - 2008/06/25 05:22 Why would you need multiple-format streaming? Do it in Flash and it works in 99.9% of the browsers out there. With no special software on the server.

That was the last and best recommendation I've received. I had my mind set on Windows Media because of the sound quality, but the ISP I use only supports Real Audio. I was trying to bundle dial up with hosting to save some money, but lets be real about REAL audio. I didn't think that was still around. But to your point, I have noticed most site are "flashing" it these days. I haven't worked with Flash in years, but I can't imagine its that difficult to set up.

Re:Website without oversight - 2008/06/26 04:07 Consider acidplanet.com if you want to host .wmas. Last I looked, you could link directly to the 'play' file on their site. That may not be true anymore, and I can't tell you how to do it, but poking around in their forum will get you answered.

Limit your links OUT to a very few sites you regularly visit and really like. If you can't do that, then at least feature only those few.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Re:Website without oversight - 2008/06/26 07:51 Go with Flash... there are some free Flash-based media players out there that you can embed right in your page (no special server requirements), and they'll stream plain old MP3s on your site. I'm using a really minimal one on my site right now, which you can see here:

http://room34.com/music/unnatural

This one doesn't let the user select the track from a playlist, although I'm pretty sure you can string multiple MP3s together back-to-back in the player. But there are others as well that may have more features... just Google around and you should find something that will suit your needs, no Flash development required.

I will definitely post it as soon as I have it. There's a bit of a money matter to work out to just finish the CD. I'm not happy with some the vocals, so I'm planning to take my Pro Tools files to a big studio and use the expensive equipment to record vocals. Then we mix. Then there is the mastering. Then there is the duplication. Money. Money. Money.
