Re:drum loops - 2008/05/16 15:29
I cannot recommend SmartLoops enough. They are very well-played and consistently recorded loops of real drums, and are "acidized" so you can change the tempo. Even better, they include a stereo mix as well as the individual drums tracks, so you can pan out the high-hat, put reverb on the snare, compress just the kick, etc. Some of the libraries also have an "ambient room" track, so you can give it that big, live "Bonham" sound if you want it. SmartLoops offer much more control of the mix than any other drum loops I have been able to find. And, like all the other drum loops for sale that I've seen, SmartLoops are royalty free.

I used them on my RPM'08 album and think they really took it up a notch. Got good feedback from folks as to the quality of the drums as well. Lots of good patterns are included in each library, as well as fills and other ear candy. Listen for yourself if you want to hear:

I checked out BetaMonkey and several others, and they are OK but only provide the stereo mix. Looperman's only saving grace is they are free, but I haven't found any loops that interested me enough to use them. Then again, I'm looking for real recorded drums, not MIDI loops, which Looperman seems to have more of.
I will have to check out the Mick Fleetwood loops. All in all, though, I'd much rather play with a real drummer if I do this again, but recording drums well is pretty tough, to say nothing of the drummer's performance and timing...
